The real test comes after you have understood how it works and then need to explain that knowledge to someone else.<\/p>\n<p>Can you explain to someone how to tell the time in Dutch? If not, you might need a refresher course. If you are new to the Dutch language, then you probably need a beginner\u2019s post. Either way, this post on telling time should help.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Tip That Makes Everything Easier<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In English, when you tell the time, the minutes are expressed in relation to the hour. However, In Dutch the half hour and the hour are just as important as each other. Therefore, in Dutch the minutes are expressed in relation to <strong>both<\/strong> the hour <strong>and<\/strong> the half hour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Hoe laat is het?<\/em> (What time is it?)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Het is vier uur.<\/em> (It is four o\u2019clock.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Het is half vier.<\/em> (It is 3:30.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Tips:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be careful if you are used to saying \u201chalf past\u201d or \u201chalf four\/five\/etc.\u201d Usually when saying this you mean 30 minutes <strong>after<\/strong> the hour but \u201chalf vier\/vijf\/etc.\u201d in Dutch, means 30 minutes <strong>before<\/strong> the hour.<\/li>\n<li>The word <strong><em>uur<\/em><\/strong> is dropped if you are not saying a round hour.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Om<\/strong><\/em> = at: <em>Hoe laat vertrek jij?<\/em> (At what time do you leave?) <em>Om zes uur.<\/em> (At six o\u2019clock.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Dividing the Clock<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The clock is divided into two horizontal halves (draw a horizontal line through the nine and three of the clock face).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Kwart<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>kwart over<\/em> = 15 minutes after the hour = <em>het is kwart over twee<\/em> = It is 2:15<\/p>\n<p><em>kwart voor<\/em> = 15 minutes before the hour = <em>het is kwart voor zeven<\/em> = it is 6:45<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Half<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>over half<\/em>\u00a0&#8211;&gt; <em>het is vijf over half zes<\/em> = it is 5:35 &#8211;&gt; this is tricky, remember <strong><em>half zes<\/em><\/strong> means 5:30 and <strong><em>vijf over<\/em><\/strong> means 5 minutes after 5:30 (half hours are as important as hours &#8211; see above)<\/p>\n<p><em>het is tien over half tien<\/em> = it is 9:40 &#8211;&gt;<strong><em> half tien<\/em><\/strong> means 9:30 and <strong><em>tien over<\/em><\/strong> means 10 minutes after 9:30<\/p>\n<p><em>voor half<\/em> &#8211;&gt; <em>het is vijf voor half zeven<\/em> = it is 6:25 &#8211;&gt; <strong><em>half zeven<\/em><\/strong> means 6:30 and <em><strong>vijf voor<\/strong><\/em> means 5 minutes before 6:30<\/p>\n<p>N.B.
