I don’t have to tell you that social media has impacted our lives in a huge way. Let’s face it, you wouldn’t be here reading this right now if it weren’t for social media.<\/p>\n

It’s infiltrated the way we speak and the way we interact. We spend an alarming amount of time on social media, “tweeting,” “google-plussing,” \u00a0“facebooking.” Our social media contacts are some of our closest friends, despite the fact that we’ve never met them in person.<\/p>\n

So it should come as no surprise that social media speak has crept into the Dutch language as well. Het woord van het jaar<\/em> (word of the year) in 2008 was twitteren<\/em>, inspired by the popular social media site, Twitter.\u00a0We have Facebook to thank for the 2009 winner, ontvrienden<\/em>. And there are others too.<\/p>\n

Take a look at the words below to brush up on your Dutch sociale media<\/em> vocabulary<\/p>\n

Crossposten<\/strong> – to crosspost (meaning to post the same message across multiple social media networks)<\/p>\n

as in…
\nIk crosspost niet heel vaak<\/em>
\n(I don’t crosspost a lot)<\/p>\n

Bij crossposten, plaats je hetzelfde bericht op meerdere sociale media fora’s<\/em>
\n(Crossposting is placing the same message on multiple social media forums)<\/p>\n

Ontvrienden<\/strong> – unfriend<\/p>\n

as in…<\/p>\n

Ik vind haar gewoon niet leuk. Ik ga haar ontvrienden.<\/em>
\n(I just don’t like her. I’m going to unfriend her)<\/p>\n

Wil je weten wie heeft jou ontvriend?<\/em>
\n(Do you want to know who unfriended you)<\/p>\n

Ik ben door mijn moeder ontvriend op Facebook.<\/em>
\n(My mother unfriended me on Facebook)<\/p>\n

Tweeten<\/strong> – to send messages on Twitter (interchangeable with twitteren<\/em>)<\/p>\n

as in…
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Ik tweet alleen ‘s ochtends terwijl ik mijn koffie drink.<\/em>
\n(I only tweet in the mornings while I’m drinking my coffee)<\/p>\n

Hij moet vaker in het Nederlands tweeten.<\/em>
\n(He needs to tweet in Dutch more often)<\/p>\n

Twitteraar<\/strong> -Someone who tweets<\/p>\n

as in…
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

De gemiddelde twitteraar is een vrouw van ongeveer dertig jaar.<\/em>
\n(The average Twitter user is a woman in her thirties)<\/p>\n

Twitteren<\/strong> – Communicating via Twitter (interchangeable with tweeten<\/em>)<\/p>\n

as in…<\/p>\n

Ik vindt het erg leuk om te twitteren<\/em>
\n(I love tweeting)<\/p>\n

Zij twittert elke dag<\/em>
\n(She tweets every day)<\/p>\n
