Let&#8217;s face it, you wouldn&#8217;t be here reading this right now if it weren&#8217;t for social media.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s infiltrated the way we speak and the way we interact. We spend an alarming amount of time on social media, &#8220;tweeting,&#8221; &#8220;google-plussing,&#8221; \u00a0&#8220;facebooking.&#8221; Our social media contacts are some of our closest friends, despite the fact that we&#8217;ve never met them in person.<\/p>\n<p>So it should come as no surprise that social media speak has crept into the Dutch language as well. <em>Het woord van het jaar<\/em> (word of the year) in 2008 was <em>twitteren<\/em>, inspired by the popular social media site, Twitter.\u00a0We have Facebook to thank for the 2009 winner, <em>ontvrienden<\/em>. And there are others too.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the words below to brush up on your Dutch <em>sociale media<\/em> vocabulary<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Crossposten<\/strong> &#8211; to crosspost (meaning to post the same message across multiple social media networks)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">as in&#8230;<br \/>\n<em>Ik crosspost niet heel vaak<\/em><br \/>\n(I don&#8217;t crosspost a lot)<\/p>\n<p><em>Bij crossposten, plaats je hetzelfde bericht op meerdere sociale media fora&#8217;s<\/em><br \/>\n(Crossposting is placing the same message on multiple social media forums)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ontvrienden<\/strong> &#8211; unfriend<\/p>\n<p>as in&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Ik vind haar gewoon niet leuk. Ik ga haar ontvrienden.<\/em><br \/>\n(I just don&#8217;t like her. I&#8217;m going to unfriend her)<\/p>\n<p><em>Wil je weten wie heeft jou ontvriend?<\/em><br \/>\n(Do you want to know who unfriended you)<\/p>\n<p><em>Ik ben door mijn moeder ontvriend op Facebook.<\/em><br \/>\n(My mother unfriended me on Facebook)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tweeten<\/strong> &#8211; to send messages on Twitter (interchangeable with<em> twitteren<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>as in&#8230;<br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ik tweet alleen &#8216;s ochtends terwijl ik mijn koffie drink.<\/em><br \/>\n(I only tweet in the mornings while I&#8217;m drinking my coffee)<\/p>\n<p><em>Hij moet vaker in het Nederlands tweeten.<\/em><br \/>\n(He needs to tweet in Dutch more often)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Twitteraar<\/strong> -Someone who tweets<\/p>\n<p>as in&#8230;<br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>De gemiddelde twitteraar is een vrouw van ongeveer dertig jaar.<\/em><br \/>\n(The average Twitter user is a woman in her thirties)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Twitteren<\/strong> &#8211; Communicating via Twitter (interchangeable with<em> tweeten<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>as in&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Ik vindt het erg leuk om te twitteren<\/em><br \/>\n(I love tweeting)<\/p>\n<p><em>Zij twittert elke dag<\/em><br \/>\n(She tweets every day)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now that you&#8217;re all caught up on Dutch social media lingo, it&#8217;s time to go out there and get social&#8230; <em>in het Nederlands, natuurlijk<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to follow Transparent Dutch on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dutchlanguage\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/learn.dutch\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a> for more tips on learning Dutch.
