Especially English is attracti<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">ve for many schools, beca<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">use it is used everywhere. It is on TV, in movies, on the internet, a<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">nd basically all around the small state. It is a tiny country that is very dependent on export and trade. Rotterdam has the biggest <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">haven <\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">(port) of Europe and fourth largest in the world. Much of what is imported goes through the Netherlands to other countries in Europe. <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Handel <\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">(trade) requires a common language. This is why the emphasis in the Netherlands was on German for a long time, since the <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">oosterburen <\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">(the<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0neigh<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">bors in the east) are the la<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">rgest trading partner. But it is a tough language, and not so present in the life of a Dutch <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">leerling <\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">(student). English is. So now, why not go with English?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Ontzettend Belangrijk<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sander Dekker, the <i>staatssecretaris <\/i>(junior minister) of education that proposed the bill, said th<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">at &#8220;we are an open economy, we earn our money often in foreign countries.&#8221; You meet many people that speak foreign languages, no matter where you work. Learning foreign languages is &#8220;<\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">ontzettend belangrijk<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">&#8221; (incredibly important) for <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">leerlingen<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, since in the end it can improve the competitive position of the Netherlands in the world economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Test<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For now, it will b<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">e a test for five years, to see how it goes. Twelve <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">basisscholen<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> (elementary schools) participate in this test. Half of all <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">lessen<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/span>may be taught in English. That is more than in the bill, beca<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">use Mr. Dekker sees himself that this is a very far-going step. Many <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">leraren<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> (teachers) don&#8217;t speak English as well as they should to teach their class entirely in English.
