and Government Terms in Dutch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the last two posts we&#8217;ve talked about the basic <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/dutch-politica\u2026-in-a-nutshell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">structure of the government<\/a>, and the different political parties (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/dutch-political-parties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Part One<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/dutch-politica\u2026ties-continued\/\">Part Two<\/a>).\u00a0 In this post I&#8217;m going to give you some terminology that should be helpful if you want to pick up a Dutch newspaper, watch the news in Dutch, or read Dutch news online.\u00a0 And I thoroughly encourage you to do these things, regardless of your level of understanding Dutch.\u00a0 In the least of things, you have to hear the language in order to master it.\u00a0 What starts out sounding like an endless stream of unfamiliar sounds will at some point turn into words that make sense to you.\u00a0 Nope, the language didn&#8217;t change, you just learned it.\u00a0 So pick up some Dutch news in any form, and see if you can find or hear these words&#8230;I bet you can!<\/p>\n<p>de regering : government<\/p>\n<p>regeren : to govern<\/p>\n<p>het bestuur : government, management, administration<\/p>\n<p>de overheid : government, authority<\/p>\n<p>de wet : the law<\/p>\n<p>het beleid : the policy<\/p>\n<p>het parlement : the parliament<\/p>\n<p>het parlementslid : the member of parliament (het lid : member)<\/p>\n<p>de politiek : the politics<\/p>\n<p>de politicus : the politician<\/p>\n<p>de partij : the party, side\u00a0 This is only for parties as a group of people with a set of views.\u00a0 A party as in a celebration is &#8220;feest&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>de economie : the economy<\/p>\n<p>de economische crisis : the economic crisis<\/p>\n<p>het milieu : the environment<\/p>\n<p>de vervuiling : the pollution<\/p>\n<p>de gezondheidszorg : the healthcare<\/p>\n<p>de verzekering : the insurance<\/p>\n<p>de samenleving : the society, literally:\u00a0 together + living<\/p>\n<p>de maatschappij : the society<\/p>\n<p>de gemeenschap : the community<\/p>\n<p>de gemeente : municipality, city or town government<\/p>\n<p>het stadsdeel : the district in a city<\/p>\n<p>het welzijn : the welfare\/well-being<\/p>\n<p>de welvaart : the prosperity<\/p>\n<p>de actie : the action, campaign, movement<\/p>\n<p>het actiepunt : the issue to be acted on<\/p>\n<p>de discriminatie : the discrimination<\/p>\n<p>de immigratie : the immigration<\/p>\n<p>de buitenlander : the foreigner, literally: outside + country<\/p>\n<p>het ongeluk \/ het ongeval : both mean the accident<\/p>\n<p>het openbaar vervoer : the public
