This also hit the Netherlands. In October last year, the agency was<br \/>\nalleged\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">through information\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">provided by Edward Snowden of tapping metadata (so information about which phone calls which phone) of 1.8 million <\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">telefoontjes\u00a0<\/em>(phone calls). As well as in other countries, the Dutch were outraged and wanted the o<em>verheid\u00a0<\/em>(government) to do\u00a0something about this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ronald Plasterk, the Dutch\u00a0<em>Minister van Binnenlandse Zaken (en Koninkrijksrelaties)\u00a0<\/em>(Minister of the Interior (and Kingdom Relations) &#8211; comparable to the American Secretary of Homeland Security) said in the TV program <em>Nieuwsuur (<a title=\"Interview Plasterk in Nieuwsuur, October 30, 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/nos.nl\/embed\/?id=v:569130&amp;autoplay=\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/nos.nl\/embed\/?id=v:569130&amp;autoplay=<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span><\/em>\u00a0that he did not know about the collection of these data, allegedly by the\u00a0NSA. Now I say that carefully. As if this\u00a0<em>schandaal\u00a0<\/em>(scandal) was not enough yet, it turned out last week that Plasterk actually knew about the 1.8 million tapped\u00a0<em>telefoont<\/em><em>jes.\u00a0<\/em>They were even collected by the Dutch services themselves!<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Tweede Kamer\u00a0<\/em>(Second Chamber, comparable to the American House of Representatives) was very upset, of course. The minister has ministerial responsibility to parliament in the Netherlands, meaning that they can only be in office as long as the parliament puts <em>vertrouwen<\/em>\u00a0(confidence) in him or her. The\u00a0<em>Tweede Kamer\u00a0<\/em>wanted to hear him on the issue, and that happened last Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>He apologized (<i>bood excuses aan<\/i>)\u00a0for what he said in\u00a0<em>Nieuwsuur,<\/em>\u00a0calling his own behavior &#8220;<em>buitengewoon onverstandig<\/em>&#8221; (extraordinarily unwise).<em>\u00a0<\/em>It was wrong of him to confirm something that he did not know for sure, which was. Even when he knew he was wrong already in November, the law restricted him to tell the Second Chamber. A good amount of the parliament members understood his reasoning and put their\u00a0<em>vertrouwen\u00a0<\/em>in him again.<\/p>\n<p>However, some members still disagreed, and wanted to oust him with a\u00a0<em>motie van vantrouwen\u00a0<\/em>(motion of no-confidence), which was introduced by the leader of the party D66 Alexander Pechtold. Ousting him is only possible if a simple majority is reached in the <em>Tweede Kamer<\/em>. Plasterk was lucky that 56% voted against this\u00a0<em>motie<\/em>.
