{"id":28,"date":"2008-12-15T01:42:46","date_gmt":"2008-12-15T05:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/?p=28"},"modified":"2014-07-18T14:06:14","modified_gmt":"2014-07-18T14:06:14","slug":"sinterklaas-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/sinterklaas-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Sinterklaas I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">I almost forgot a very Dutch tradition\u2026 It\u2019s been very busy here so I completely forgot about it until after the \u2018event\u2019 was over\u2026 Of course I\u2019m talking about the Dutch children\u2019s hero: Sinterklaas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Every year on the 5<sup>th<\/sup> of November, Sinterklaas comes to the Netherlands from Spain with a large steam boat, his trusted horse Amerigo and his Moorish helpers, \u2018de Zwarte Pieten\u2019 or \u2018Black Petes\u2019. He comes to the Netherlands to celebrate his birthday and on the 6<sup>th<\/sup> of December when Sinterklaas returns to Spain, all children receive a present.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">So how did this all get started? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">About 1600 years ago, a certain Nicolaas was the bishop of Myra, a city in small Asia which was under Roman command. He was loved amongst the people because of his generosity for the poor and his love for children. After his death in 326, his bones were transferred to Italy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">For centuries people worshipped him, adults and children alike. Churches and places were named after him, he became the patron for shippers, travellers, students, children, prisoners, bakers, merchants, lawyers, cities (Amsterdam) and countries (Russia and Greece). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">In those days it was already custom that children received a present from a bearded man on a white horse, if they hadn\u2019t been naughty of course.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">After some time, Italy changed to Spain, hence the black Moorish helpers. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The origin of the modern Sinterklaas celebration, can be traced back to the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">A teacher from Amsterdam, Jan Schenkman (1806 \u2013 1863) wrote the children\u2019s book <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u2018Sint Nicolaas en zijn knecht\u2019 (St. Nicholas and his helper) with the text from the still popular Sinterklaas song: Zie ginds komt de stoomboot (Here comes the steamboat). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Italy became Spain and the \u2018roe\u2019 and \u2018zak\u2019 of the Black Pete were also introduced (for pedagogic reasons). The \u2018roe\u2019 was some kind of \u2018whisk\u2019 made of small twigs and probably used to \u2018punish\u2019 bad children. The naughty children would be taken back to Spain in a large jute bag (the same bag that first contained all the presents). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Sint started to ride the white horse over the rooftops and the presents were delivered through the chimneys into the awaiting shoes of the children. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Another man to influence the celebration, was Jan Pieter Heije (1809 -1876) with his song: Zie de maan schijnt door de bomen (See the moon shine through the trees). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">In the 90\u2019s of the last century, the horse of Sinterklaas got a name in the Netherlands: Amerigo. In Belgium the horse is called: Slecht Weer Vandaag (Bad Weather Today). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">In the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century, people started to \u2018place their shoes\u2019. At first they did so at church and the profits would go to the poor. Rich people would put something in the placed shoes and the gifts were shared equally on the 6<sup>th<\/sup> of December, the official date of death, of the Saint Nicholas. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">In the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century, children started to place their shoe near the fireplace in the living rooms and the Dutch artist Jan Steen made a painting of this happening in the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century. On the paintings you can see what the children received in their shoes. Often it was candy\u2026 the kind we still associate with Sinterklaas\u2026 speculaas, pepernoten and marzipan. Besides candy children also received toys\u2026 and today the Chocolate letter is an important ingredient in the treats. Sometimes boys would find a \u2018roe\u2019 or a little bag of salt in their shoe. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Of course Sinterklaas appreciates it a lot, if he finds a carrot in the shoe for his horse, or an apple, or sugar cubes.
