Yesterday, the Netherlands was hit by a huge storm with severe rainfall. A weeralarm\u00a0<\/em>(weather alert) in the stage\u00a0code oranje\u00a0<\/em>(code orange) was announced in the provinces\u00a0Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Noord-Brabant\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Utrecht<\/em>. This means that there is a chance of extraordinary weather coming with a greater chance of schade en ongevallen\u00a0<\/em>(damage and accidents). This turned out to be more than true…<\/p>\n

Some places experienced enormous amounts of\u00a0regen\u00a0<\/em>(rain). For example, Kaatsheuvel\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0Alphen aan de Rijn\u00a0<\/em>both got around 150 mm. That is more than a gallon of water per square feet fallen within a day! In Alphen aan de Rijn<\/i>, a dyke was about to break and flood an entire\u00a0woonwijk\u00a0<\/em>(neighborhood). Fortunately, the bewoners\u00a0<\/i>(inhabitants) could help each other out and build up a wall of\u00a0zandzakken\u00a0<\/em>(sandbags). That stopped the water.<\/p>\n

Others just enjoyed the water, and floated on their\u00a0luchtbedden\u00a0<\/em>(air mattresses) through the flooded streets.<\/p>\n

But it can also be quite dangerous. See below a video of\u00a0Heemskerk\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0wateroverlast\u00a0<\/em>(“water nuisance”) there:<\/p>\n

There was even a town called Maarssen<\/em>\u00a0where 216 mm was recorded:<\/p>\n

To show how extreme these amounts are: Normally, in the entire month of July around 50-80 mm of rain falls. So within a day, the amount of two entire months has come down!<\/p>\n

All this water left quite some damage. Many houses were flooded partly, which leaves\u00a0waterschade\u00a0<\/em>(water damage) which is not easy to repair. Irreplaceable damage was also done in\u00a0for example\u00a0Bussum,\u00a0<\/em>where the\u00a0gemeentehuis\u00a0<\/em>(town hall) was flooded and the\u00a0archief <\/em>(archive) and the\u00a0kunstcollectie\u00a0<\/em>(art collection) were touched by the water. The total damage still has to be calculated, but already now, the\u00a0woningsverzekeringen\u00a0<\/em>(house insurances) received 10 million euro of\u00a0schadeclaims\u00a0<\/em>(damage claims).<\/p>\n
