Every year the Van Dale <\/em>dictionary group selects a couple of words. Everyone is invited to vote for the word of the woord van het jaar. <\/em>These words are usually based on political or social events from the year. The past winners have been:<\/p>\n

2013- selfie
\n<\/em>After the craze of selfies, including Obama\u2019s selfie with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Denmark\u2019s Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt, selfie<\/em> couldn\u2019t miss joining the Dutch vocabulary!<\/p>\n

2012- project x-feest
\n<\/em>In Groningen, a party was crashed thanks to social media promotion. Much like the movie \u201cProject X\u201d, they tore up the town and made the news.<\/p>\n

2011- tuigdorp
\n<\/em>This word owes its fame to the PVV party, the conservative populist party of the Netherlands. According to the PVV, repeating offenders should be placed in a tuigdorp<\/em> which can be loosely translated to a scum village.<\/p>\n

2010- gedoogregering
\n<\/em>An accepted or accepting government.<\/p>\n

2009- Ontvrienden
\n<\/em>I can only assume this word won because of social media. Ontvrienden <\/em>means to unfriend.<\/p>\n

This year, the nominees are:<\/strong><\/p>\n

clownspiet\u00ad- <\/em>a play between clown and Zwarte Piet<\/a><\/p>\n

crimiclown<\/em>– a clown who terrifies people<\/p>\n

dagobertducktaks<\/em>– extra tax for the very wealthy; this word makes reference to Dagobert, also known as Scrooge McDuck<\/p>\n

fotobom<\/em>– accidently appearing in someone\u2019s photo<\/p>\n

jihadgezin<\/em>– a family in which one or more members have gone to fight with radical Muslims in Syria<\/p>\n

kalifaatganger<\/em>– a radical Muslim who has gone to the self-declared Muslim caliphate<\/p>\n

moestuinsocialisme<\/em>– vegetable garden socialism; this word was coined after minister Jetta Klijnsma said gardening is good for old people on low incomes<\/p>\n

stemfie-<\/em> taking a selfie while voting or stemmen<\/em>; this was very popular during elections and even stirred a debate questioning if stemfies<\/em> were legal<\/p>\n

straatintimidatie<\/em>– intimidation on the street<\/p>\n

wegkijkstaat-<\/em> look away state; a neo-liberal society in which everyone ignores those less fortunate than themselves<\/p>\n
