Everyone is invited to vote for the word of the <em>woord van het jaar. <\/em>These words are usually based on political or social events from the year. The past winners have been:<\/p>\n<p>2013- <em>selfie<br \/>\n<\/em>After the craze of selfies, including Obama\u2019s selfie with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Denmark\u2019s Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt, <em>selfie<\/em> couldn\u2019t miss joining the Dutch vocabulary!<\/p>\n<p>2012- <em>project x-feest<br \/>\n<\/em>In Groningen, a party was crashed thanks to social media promotion. Much like the movie \u201cProject X\u201d, they tore up the town and made the news.<\/p>\n<p>2011- <em>tuigdorp<br \/>\n<\/em>This word owes its fame to the PVV party, the conservative populist party of the Netherlands. According to the PVV, repeating offenders should be placed in a <em>tuigdorp<\/em> which can be loosely translated to a scum village.<\/p>\n<p>2010- <em>gedoogregering<br \/>\n<\/em>An accepted or accepting government.<\/p>\n<p>2009- <em>Ontvrienden<br \/>\n<\/em>I can only assume this word won because of social media. <em>Ontvrienden <\/em>means to unfriend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This year, the nominees are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>clownspiet\u00ad- <\/em>a play between clown and <a title=\"Zwarte Piet \u2013 Black Pete, still there?\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/zwarte-piet-black-pete-still-there\/\">Zwarte Piet<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>crimiclown<\/em>&#8211; a clown who terrifies people<\/p>\n<p><em>dagobertducktaks<\/em>&#8211; extra tax for the very wealthy; this word makes reference to Dagobert, also known as Scrooge McDuck<\/p>\n<p><em>fotobom<\/em>&#8211; accidently appearing in someone\u2019s photo<\/p>\n<p><em>jihadgezin<\/em>&#8211; a family in which one or more members have gone to fight with radical Muslims in Syria<\/p>\n<p><em>kalifaatganger<\/em>&#8211; a radical Muslim who has gone to the self-declared Muslim caliphate<\/p>\n<p><em>moestuinsocialisme<\/em>&#8211; vegetable garden socialism; this word was coined after minister Jetta Klijnsma said gardening is good for old people on low incomes<\/p>\n<p><em>stemfie-<\/em> taking a selfie while voting or <em>stemmen<\/em>; this was very popular during elections and even stirred a debate questioning if <em>stemfies<\/em> were legal<\/p>\n<p><em>straatintimidatie<\/em>&#8211; intimidation on the street<\/p>\n<p><em>wegkijkstaat-<\/em> look away state; a neo-liberal society in which everyone ignores those less fortunate than themselves<\/p>\n<p>You can check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/woordvanhetjaar.vandale.nl\/nl\/#votenow\">Van Dale<\/a> website and cast your <em>stem<\/em>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every year the Van Dale dictionary group selects a couple of words.
