Every language has many afkortingen <\/em>(abbreviations)\u00a0to make… well, everything shorter! But what means what? Below some valuable abbreviations of Dutch words and expressions!<\/p>\n

Aanstaande\u00a0<\/em>–\u00a0a.s.\u00a0<\/em>– upcoming<\/p>\n

Now, these official\u00a0afkortingen\u00a0<\/em>are all nice and great, and you will see them in many places. But what about the more colloquial ones, the ones we use to tell how much we love our partner, the ones we use to just quickly write a message? In Dutch, many of these use English\u00a0afkortingen<\/em>, that everyone understands.<\/p>\n

SMS\u00a0<\/em>– text. Well, yes.\u00a0SMS’en\u00a0<\/em>means texting. Although, nowadays, people are more into\u00a0appen<\/em>, which refers to sending a message via services like\u00a0Whatsapp.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

hvj\u00a0<\/em>–\u00a0hou van jou!\u00a0<\/em>– I love you!<\/p>\n

w8\u00a0<\/em>– wacht\u00a0<\/i>– wait\/hold on<\/p>\n

ff\u00a0<\/em>– even\u00a0<\/i>– for a moment. This is used a lot, as for example\u00a0w8 ff<\/em>, which means: hold on for\u00a0a sec!<\/p>\n

brb – be right back\u00a0<\/em>– be right back, or, as you would say in Dutch,\u00a0ik ben er zo weer.<\/em><\/p>\n

biw\u00a0<\/em>–\u00a0ben ik weer –\u00a0<\/em>I am back again. This would be the message when you come back from a\u00a0brb.<\/em><\/p>\n

btw\u00a0<\/em>– by the way – by the way. Yes. Dutch use it too!<\/p>\n

gtg –\u00a0<\/em>got to go – got to go. Yep, again.<\/p>\n

There are endless of such English\u00a0afkortingen\u00a0<\/em>that are also used in Dutch. Very useful!<\/p>\n
