Other than the grocery store, dogs accompany their owners to the market and the terraces, enjoying the sunny days and people-watching. Everyday dozens of people walk by my home with a dog in hand&#8230;I&#8217;ve even seen some people walk their horses! It seems that animals are really part of the family here in the Netherlands!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Because of the heatwave two weeks ago, animal-safety was also a concern. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/welkom-heatwave\/\">The <em>hitteplan<\/em> I recently wrote abou<\/a>t also includes provisions for animal safety with the soaring temperatures.\u00a0People were advised to provide enough water and shade for their animals and to be on the lookout for any signs of dehydration.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3339\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2015\/07\/2015-07-04-15.50.36.jpg\" aria-label=\"2015 07 04 15.50.36 300x224\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3339\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3339\"  alt=\"Our cat Mona enjoying the shade of our tomato plans during the heatwave.\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2015\/07\/2015-07-04-15.50.36-300x224.jpg\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our cat Mona enjoying the shade of our tomato plants during the heatwave (personal photograph).<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">So what do you do if your pet has a medical emergency?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Well, in the Netherlands you can dial 144 which is the number that connects you to the\u00a0<em>dierenpolitie<\/em> which is part of the regular police force. The\u00a0<em>dierenpolitie<\/em> is in charge of maintaining the safety of all animals in the Netherlands from people who might want to harm them. This includes neglect, abuse, killing, poaching and animal pornography among others. When you call 144, the\u00a0<em>centralist<\/em> or the operator will send to your address the appropriate response team, whether that be the police or an animal ambulance. The police isn&#8217;t only available for pets, but also for farm and wild animals.
