The celebrations for 200 years of Dutch Kingdom just ended. That started in 1815. And the province Drenthe turned 200 years old. It is also the year that the Dutch\u00a0<em>Staten-Generaal\u00a0<\/em>(States-General) turned 200 years old. What is this\u00a0<em>Staten-Generaal<\/em> exactly?<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Coat_of_arms_of_the_Staten_Generaal.svg\" aria-label=\"207px Coat Of Arms Of The Staten Generaal.svg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\"  alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"359\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/c\/ca\/Coat_of_arms_of_the_Staten_Generaal.svg\/207px-Coat_of_arms_of_the_Staten_Generaal.svg.png\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coat of Arms of the Staten Generaal (Image by Fry1989 &amp; Sodacan at commons.wikipedia.org)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It is the word that refers to the Dutch\u00a0<em>Eerste Kamer\u00a0<\/em>(First Chamber, senate)\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Tweede Kamer\u00a0<\/em>(Second Chamber, parliament), comparable to the American Senate and House of Representatives, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Eerste Kamer\u00a0<\/em>consists of 75 members chosen by the\u00a0<em>Provinciale Staten<\/em>, which are the councils of representatives of each province. These representatives are directly elected by the people of that province. However, this was not always the case. Between 1815 and 1848, they were chosen and appointed by the King or Queen of the Netherlands. The number of members was also not always the same. It started with 40 to 60 members, was reduced and then increased again to the current 75 in 1956.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Tweede Kamer\u00a0<\/em>is made up of 150 members elected directly by the people. There was a time that there was 1 representative per 45 000 citizens, but in\u00a01956 the number was fixed to 150. Today this means that 1 member of the\u00a0<em>Tweede Kamer\u00a0<\/em>represents around 113 000 citizens!<\/p>\n<p>Both\u00a0<em>Kamers\u00a0<\/em>meet in a building complex called the\u00a0<em>Binnenhof\u00a0<\/em>in\u00a0Den Haag. And for the current\u00a0<em>Staten-Generaal<\/em>, with both chambers, this is true. However,\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Staten-Generaal\u00a0<\/em>already existed long before that time &#8211; last year it turned 550 years! Back in 1464, the\u00a0<em>Staten-Generaal\u00a0<\/em>referred to the three status of representatives of the people, whose support and consent the king needed to be able to reign properly. These were high clergymen, knights and the bourgeoisie. The French word\u00a0<em>\u00e9tats,\u00a0<\/em>which referred to these three status was translated in Dutch to\u00a0<em>Staten<\/em>.
