Brussels is the capital of Belgium, the European Union, and NATO, and is only a two hour train ride from Rotterdam, bringing this international conflict close to home in\u00a0<em>het nederlandse taalgebied\u00a0<\/em>in the Netherlands and Flanders.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the Dutch words used to describe\u00a0security situations and terror prevention are\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/onzetaal.nl\/taaladvies\/advies\/samenstelling\" target=\"_blank\">samenstellingen<\/a><\/em>, or large, agglutinative words made up of several smaller words. Licensed under CC BY 2.0 via <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Grand_place_Brussels.jpg#\/media\/File:Grand_place_Brussels.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<p>On\u00a0Saturday, Brussels officially <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brusselnieuws.be\/nl\/nieuws\/maximale-terreurdreiging-brussels-gewest-geen-metroverkeer\" target=\"_blank\">declared\u00a0its highest <i>dreigingsniveau<\/i><\/a> or security alert\u00a0throughout the city. Reports from the Belgian <i>inlichtingendienst, <\/i>cooperating<i>\u00a0<\/i>with similar\u00a0intelligence services like the CIA and M16,\u00a0suggested that there was an impending attack on the city. This has provoked the Belgian government to take the maximum\u00a0<i>veiligheidsmaatregelen<\/i>, such as shutting down public transit and closing schools, to prevent an attack like the ones that occurred to its south the week before.<\/p>\n<p>While no official <i>noodtoestand<\/i> has been declared in Belgium (unlike in France, where a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraaf.nl\/buitenland\/24765572\/__Noodtoestand_Frankrijk_verlengd__.html\" target=\"_blank\">nation-wide state of emergency<\/a> has been declared and extended), authorities in Brussels are taking measures to prevent a <i>terreuraanslag<\/i> from occurring in their city. This week many <i>huiszoekingen<\/i> have been carried out in and around the capital city, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hln.be\/hln\/nl\/957\/Binnenland\/article\/detail\/2530166\/2015\/11\/19\/Brussel-Opnieuw-huiszoekingen.dhtml\" target=\"_blank\">searching citizens&#8217; houses<\/a> in areas including the Molenbeek neighborhood that has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrc.nl\/next\/2015\/11\/17\/1560627\" target=\"_blank\">a history of producing violent jihadists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This video from a Belgian news source describes the results of some of the recent\u00a0<em>huiszoekingen<\/em>. Learners of a\u00a0<em>Hollands\u00a0<\/em>dialect of Dutch may have a little difficulty understanding\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Vlaams\u00a0<\/em>dialect used in Belgium, in which case you can turn on the subtitles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IbwJMvixJ1M\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IbwJMvixJ1M<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Netherlands, authorities remain on alert for potential threats. The <a href=\"http:\/\/nos.nl\/artikel\/2070972-dreigingsniveaus-en-noodtoestanden-hoe-zit-dat.html\" target=\"_blank\">current terror threat level is set to <i>substantieel<\/i><\/a>, where it has remained since the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ad.nl\/ad\/nl\/1012\/Nederland\/article\/detail\/3627620\/2014\/04\/03\/5000-Nederlanders-jagen-op-jihadisten.dhtml\" target=\"_blank\">increase in\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ad.nl\/ad\/nl\/1012\/Nederland\/article\/detail\/3627620\/2014\/04\/03\/5000-Nederlanders-jagen-op-jihadisten.dhtml\" target=\"_blank\">jihadgangers<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>in March 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch government qualifies its <i>dreigingsniveaus<\/i> in four levels:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"line-height: 150%\">\n<li><b>Minimaal<\/b>: minimal or no national or international terrorist threat<\/li>\n<li><b>Beperkt<\/b>: limited threat; the Netherlands is either hardly mentioned or not mentioned at all in threats from serious terror organizations<\/li>\n<li><b>Substantieel<\/b>: substantial realistic threat; attacks are taking place in lands comparable to the Netherlands, and the Netherlands is regularly named in threats from terror networks<\/li>\n<li><b>Kritiek<\/b>: critical threat, the highest level of alarm; strong signs that a direct attack inside the Netherlands will take place<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For the government to raise the alert to the fourth and highest level, there must be solid evidence of an &#8220;<i>op handen zijnde aanslag<\/i>&#8220;, or an attack clearly being prepared or carried out.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas Brussels is the de facto capital of the European Union and NATO, the Netherlands is perhaps a less opportune target for ISIS attacks. However, the Netherlands is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rtlnieuws.nl\/nieuws\/binnenland\/bombardementen-nederland-top-3-actiefste-landen\" target=\"_blank\">third most active participant in airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq<\/a>, and is frequently the object of negative press for its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elsevier.nl\/Europese-Unie\/nieuws\/2008\/2\/Rapport-Islamofobie-in-Nederland-groeit-ELSEVIER157824W\/\" target=\"_blank\">problems with islamophobia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As learners of Dutch or any other language, we&#8217;re all investing in another culture and striving to be better world citizens in some way, and it affects\u00a0us when the homes of the languages and cultures we&#8217;re devoting so much of ourselves to learning about is faced with such a tragedy. So far we can all be glad the home of the language and culture we love so much &#8212; both the Netherlands and Belgium &#8212; is safe and sound.<\/p>\n<p>To stay up to date on what&#8217;s going on in the Netherlands and\u00a0Belgium, you can read any of the news sources linked to in this article, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/nos.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\">NOS<\/a> or\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.volkskrant.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\">de Volkskrant<\/a> <\/em>in the Netherlands, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hln.be\/\" target=\"_blank\">HLN<\/a> or\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brusselnieuws.be\/nl\" target=\"_blank\">Brusselnieuws<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>for a Belgian perspective.<\/p>\n<h3>Some helpful Dutch\u00a0<em>samenstellingen\u00a0<\/em>for discussing security situations:<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"line-height: 150%\">\n<li><i>samenstelling<\/i>: a compound word, made up of multiple other words.
