If you happen to visit the Amsterdam so shortly before the <em>kerstdagen<\/em>\u00a0(Christmas Days), you want to know where to go for the best shops! You are in the right place, as Amsterdam has some great shopping areas to offer. Located not far from the<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/traveling-by-train-in-the-netherlands\/\">\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/traveling-by-train-in-the-netherlands\/\">Centraal Station<\/a><\/em>, and starting right at the Dam, it is also the place to reach easiest when you visit the Dutch capital. Blue circle: The Dam.<br \/> (Map data by Google, \u00a92015 Google)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) long Kalverstraat is home to some of the bigger brands out there, such as\u00a0Urban Outfitters, H&amp;M, Zara, The Sting, Pimkie, Forever 21, Ici Paris XL, Mango or The Body Shop. Many Dutch chains are housed here, too. The big Dutch\u00a0<em>warenhuizen\u00a0<\/em>(ware houses)\u00a0V&amp;D, and<em>\u00a0<\/em>De Bijenkorf at the Dam are also located here. Around the\u00a0<em>Leidseplein<\/em> you can find many night clubs, bars and caf\u00e9s. On one end of the street lies the\u00a0<em>Leidseplein<\/em>, on the other the\u00a0<em>Koningsplein<\/em>, which through the\u00a0<em>Heiligeweg\u00a0<\/em>connects to the\u00a0<em>Kalverstraat<\/em>. Just like the\u00a0<em>Kalverstraat<\/em>, it is a street only for pedestrians. Since 1903, trams share the road too. Even\u00a0<em>fietsers\u00a0<\/em>(bicyclists) have to go around the street.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can I buy here?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Leidseplein got known with its shoe shops, which are still well-represented. It houses shops like <em>Ecco, Adidas <\/em>and\u00a0<em>Abercrombie &amp; Fitch<\/em>.\u00a0The street also connects to the\u00a0<em>Bloemenmarkt\u00a0<\/em>(flower market), which is located on the\u00a0<em>Singel\u00a0<\/em>next to the\u00a0<em>gracht\u00a0<\/em>there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the way&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The street was built in 1658 to connect Amsterdam to Leiden, hence the name\u00a0<em>Leidsestraat<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>In\u00a0<em>Monopoly<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Leidsestraat\u00a0<\/em>is the second most expensive street.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">For Part 2, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/shopping-in-amsterdam-pt-2\/\">click here<\/a>.
