The\u00a0<em>Vastelaovendsleedsje 2016<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mestreech 2016 - Confetti -\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fvZYeLQw1Gc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Every year, a\u00a0<em>Vastelaovendsleedsje\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;Carnival song&#8221; in the Maastricht dialect) is chosen. This year, it is\u00a0<em>Confetti\u00a0<\/em>by the\u00a0carnival band\u00a0<em>de Zes K\u00f6p<\/em> (&#8220;The six heads&#8221; in the dialect). However, it is not played much during Carnival! Just today, while walking around \u00a0a few hours through Maastricht, I heard one song many times over:\u00a0<em>De K\u00f6rk\u00a0<\/em>by\u00a0<em>Fabrizio:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Videoclip: Fabrizio - De K\u00f6rk\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E_8Kb0KIp2E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The text of the refrain, in\u00a0<em>Limburgs<\/em>, Dutch and in an English translation:<\/p>\n<p>Jao daan riete veer de k\u00f6rk oet die fles (<em>Ja, daar gaat weer de kurk uit de fles\u00a0<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0Yeah, there goes the cork out the bottle again)<br \/>\nPolonaise op de beat vaan &#8216;t orkes (<em>Polonaise op de beat van het orkest\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; Conga line on the beat of the band)<br \/>\nEn de frietewagel maak vaanalles klaor (<em>En de frietwagen maakt van alles klaar &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>And the fries tent makes all kinds of things)<br \/>\nUt weurt hei esmer groeter en mer gekker eeder jaor (<em>Het wordt alsmaar groter en gekker ieder jaar\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; It is getting ever bigger and crazier every year).<\/p>\n<p>This year,\u00a0<em>Fabrizio\u00a0<\/em>has another hit:\u00a0<em>Roetewisser\u00a0<\/em>(<em>Ruitenwisser<\/em> &#8211; window wipers):<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fabrizio - Roetewisser\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wwFQrSTvIIc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>2. The\u00a0<em>Zate Hermeniekes<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carnival: Zate Hermenie in Maastricht\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nIahb1bA9TU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Zate Hermenie\u00a0<\/em>can be translated to a &#8220;Drunk Marching Brass Band&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Drunk&#8221;, because it is Carnival, and well, it is the time to drink\u00a0<em>a lot<\/em>. Of course, not all <em>Zate Hermeniekes\u00a0<\/em>play while drunk, but I am sure some do.\u00a0You can judge that by just listening to the music. If it is bad, you know the answer!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Marching&#8221;, because the bands are going all across Maastricht, even through\u00a0the\u00a0smallest\u00a0alleys (they make it fit! See the video above).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Brass&#8221;, because most band members have brass instruments, and brass instruments are, next to the accordion, the most heard instruments during Carnival.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, &#8220;Band&#8221;, because the\u00a0<em>Zate Hermeniekes\u00a0<\/em>are marching in groups, every member\u00a0with their own instrument.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Zate Hermeniekes\u00a0<\/em>are there first and foremost to have fun. However, they also stand for<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>3. She is a market vendor, who represents the common people. To put her up on a stick reflects a theme of Carnival: everything that is normally high, is now low. And the other way around. This is the reason why the prince of Carnival is just a normal guy, nobody special. During Carnival, she wears a wreath.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The sculpture on the <em>Markt<\/em>, the square where a market is held every Wednesday and Friday,\u00a0is a symbol for this\u00a0<em>Mooswief<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>4.\u00a0<em>Alaaf\u00a0<\/em>is not done in Maastricht<\/h3>\n<p><em>Alaaf<\/em>, a very common word used in Carnival, especially in German Carnival around\u00a0<em>Keulen<\/em> (Cologne), is not used at all in Maastricht Carnival. So if you go to Maastricht &#8211; don&#8217;t use\u00a0<em>Alaaf!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you celebrating Carnival this year? Where?
