Even in this current computer age, lot\u2019s of letters are still written on paper\u2026 Either handwritten or printed. Professional letters, personal letters\u2026 letters all over the world still manage to find their way. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So, I would like to give you a little information on what to pay attention to when writing a letter in Dutch.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The business letter. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A business letter usually addresses a person like this: \u2018Geachte\u2019, which means you hold the addressee in high esteem. It shows respect. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now, if you know this person to be male and you also know his name, for example Bruinsma, you would start the letter:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Geachte heer Bruinsma\u2019 (or Geachte mevrouw Bruinsma in the case of a woman). <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, there are also names with additives like: van, van de, van der, van den\u2026 etc. <\/span><\/p>\n

For example: Gerrit van de Berg, Gerrit van Heukelom, Gerrit van den Berg\u2026 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

As you can see, all the extra words are written with lowercases, but as soon as the first name is left away, look what happens\u2026 The first letter becomes an uppercase. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Geachte heer Van den Berg<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Geachte mevrouw Van den Berg<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Old fashioned language is still very common amongst lawyers and governmental institutes like \u2018de Belastingdienst\u2019(IRS). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s very common they start a letter addressing the person as \u2018weledelgestrenge heer\u2019 or \u2018weledelgestrenge mevrouw\u2019. And, there\u2019s not really a good translation I think, that would capture the overblown meaning of the word \u2018weledelgestrenge\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To end a business letter in a professional and respectful way, you end with \u2018hoogachtend,\u2019 which can be translated with \u2018with the highest regards\u2019 or something like that. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The personal letter. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A personal letter is very different in lay out and tone. No need for overblown greetings and titles, just affectionate language to express your appreciation for the other person.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You can start the letter with \u2018Beste \u2026\u2019 <\/span>or \u2018Lieve \u2026\u2019 depending on how close you are to this person (\u2018lieve\u2019 is more affectionate than \u2018beste\u2019). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, you only use the first name, or maybe even an affectionate pet name, but in a personal letter you leave out the family name. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You can then end the letter with \u2018groetjes,\u2019 or \u2018met vriendelijke groet,\u2019 again depending on how close you are to this person (\u2018groetjes\u2019 is more affectionate than \u2018met vriendelijke groet\u2019). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
