The weather in the Netherlands has been nothing short of\u00a0<em>gek<\/em> with temperatures reaching the 20 degrees Celsius and then dropping back down a few weeks later to almost freezing. Yesterday and today were definitely the\u00a0<em>gekste<\/em> <em>dagen<\/em>\u00a0with some areas waking up with snow, hail all over the country and clouds everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&#039;Ik werd wakker toen mijn tent instortte door sneeuw&#039; - RTL NIEUWS\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qod1s-aJAvY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So given the Dutch ability to withstand crazy weather, here are three ways to express the current Dutch weather:<\/p>\n<p>1. <em>Wat een hondenweer!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yes, the weather can be as miserable as a dog (although <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/the-advantages-of-pets-in-the-netherlands\/\">dogs and pets in general are quite taken care of in the Netherlands<\/a>). It seems we tend to associate bad weather to pets in several languages!<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0<em>Het regent pijpenstelen!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This literally means that it is raining pipes, which doesn&#8217;t make much sense. The\u00a0<em>pijpensteel\u00a0<\/em>is the part of the pipe between the mouth piece and where you put the tobacco. The expression compares the drops of rain to this part of the pipe, thin, straight and long.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/BTqiX\" aria-label=\"406109849 D425704ef0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  alt=\"Ferndown Israel Pipe of the Year 2006\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/127\/406109849_d425704ef0.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0<em>Kut weer, h\u00e9?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I apologize for the bad language, but this expression sums up how I felt yesterday when I saw snow in Maastricht&#8230;yes&#8230;snow in April!
