In most\u00a0Intercity’s\u00a0<\/em>(intercity train – high speed trains) of\u00a0Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS)\u00a0<\/em>(Dutch Railways – NS, the main railway company), you will find a\u00a0stiltecoup\u00e9\u00a0<\/em>(silence train compartment), in which you are not allowed to talk. Intended for people that want to travel in silence, because they read a book, need to focus on some work, want to do a dutje\u00a0<\/em>(nap), or just because they like it stil\u00a0<\/em>(quiet).<\/p>\n

Reizigers houden zich niet aan de regels<\/em><\/h2>\n

Stilte<\/em>! Decals (also in English!) on the windows tell you that in this coup\u00e9<\/em>, it has to be quiet!<\/p><\/div>\n

The stiltecoup\u00e9<\/em>, or as NS itself wants to call it,\u00a0the\u00a0stiltezone\u00a0<\/em>(silence zone)\u00a0was introduced in 2003. In\u00a0dubbeldekkers\u00a0<\/em>(double-deckers), the\u00a0stiltecoup\u00e9\u00a0<\/em>is always the upper deck, because\u00a0reizigers\u00a0<\/em>(travelers) that care about the\u00a0stiltecoup\u00e9\u00a0<\/em>prefer that.<\/p>\n

Geweldig<\/em>, toch?\u00a0<\/em>(Great, right?) However, NS has received many\u00a0klachten\u00a0<\/em>(complaints) over the years, because allegedly many people do not follow the\u00a0huisregels\u00a0<\/em>(house rules) and talk anyway! There are, of course,\u00a0conducteurs\u00a0<\/em>(conductors) who are supposed to\u00a0terechtwijzen\u00a0<\/em>(reprimand) the praters\u00a0<\/em>(talkers).<\/p>\n

After\u00a0onderzoek\u00a0<\/em>(research), NS found out that this does not always happen, however. Obviously, the\u00a0conducteurs\u00a0<\/em>are not always present in every\u00a0stiltecoup\u00e9. <\/em>Also, most\u00a0reizigers\u00a0<\/em>are aware that they are in a\u00a0stiltecoup\u00e9<\/em>, but keep talking anyway.\u00a0And so\u00a0reizigers\u00a0<\/em>themselves\u00a0have to ask\u00a0the\u00a0praters\u00a0<\/em>to be quiet.<\/p>\n

Beleefd\u00a0<\/em>(Politely):\u00a0Wilt u alstublieft wat zachter praten? U zit in een stiltecoup\u00e9. Dank u wel!\u00a0<\/em>(Would you please talk a little softer? You are sitting in a silence compartment. Thank you!)<\/p>\n

Either way, reactions can differ. The\u00a0reiziger\u00a0<\/em>rather asks kletsende\u00a0<\/em>(chatting)\u00a0older ladies for silence than a bellende\u00a0<\/em>(phoning)\u00a0muscly\u00a0\u00a0guy. What if they react aggressively?<\/p>\n

The only aanduiding\u00a0<\/em>(indication) that\u00a0shows you that you are in a\u00a0stiltecoup\u00e9\u00a0<\/em>are the window decals, icons on the outside of the\u00a0treinstellen\u00a0<\/em>(train coaches), and some on the inside. The displays in each\u00a0coup\u00e9\u00a0<\/em>also show how to behave in a\u00a0stiltecoup\u00e9<\/em> (in een stiltezone moet het \u00e9cht stil zijn\u00a0<\/em>(in a silence zone it\u00a0has to be\u00a0really\u00a0<\/em>quiet), but does not say whether you are in one or not.\u00a0Many\u00a0reizigers\u00a0<\/em>think that the\u00a0stiltecoup\u00e9s\u00a0<\/em>are not indicated sufficiently. In the\u00a0Volkskrant\u00a0<\/em>of\u00a0zaterdag\u00a0<\/em>(Saturday), some\u00a0reizigers\u00a0<\/em>expressed their\u00a0meningen\u00a0<\/em>(opinions) about this.<\/p>\n

Pierre says:\u00a0“De stilte-aanduiding buiten de treinstellen en binnen de coup\u00e9s [is] onvoldoende en onduidelijk. Daar hoef je geen onderzoek voor te doen. Dat ziet een kind.”\u00a0<\/em>(The silence indication outside the train coaches and inside the compartments [is] insufficient and unclear. You don’t need to do research for that. Even a child sees that.)<\/p>\n

Dirk gives a few points that could be improved about the onduidelijkheid\u00a0<\/em>(uncertainty) of the\u00a0stilte-aanduiding<\/em>. He says the\u00a0deuren\u00a0<\/em>(doors) should say that you are entering a\u00a0stiltecoup\u00e9<\/em>, the kind of\u00a0deuren\u00a0<\/em>should be different than the regular\u00a0deuren<\/em>, and should and should cancel outside noise, and every stoel\u00a0<\/em>(chair) should have the\u00a0silence icon on the headrest.<\/p>\n

Roeland and Mr Boon say that it is odd that there are\u00a0vierzitters\u00a0<\/em>(four seaters, as on the picture above) in a stiltecoup\u00e9<\/em>. “Zitjes voor vier zijn impliciete uitnodigingen voor gesprek<\/em>“, (Seats for four are implicit invitations for conversation) thinks Mr Boon.<\/p>\n

Mijn mening<\/em><\/h2>\n

I must agree with them. Currently, the silence zones are not indicated properly, and should get a different atmosphere than the regular coup\u00e9s<\/em>. In new trains, NS placed a\u00a0loungebank\u00a0<\/em>(lounge couch) in the lower decks of\u00a0dubbeldekkers<\/em>, as to invite people to talk with each other there, and the upper decks are for reading and working, but talking is still allowed. Next to these two zones, there are still some\u00a0stiltecoup\u00e9s<\/em>. So now there are even three zones, instead of just two. Here is my opinion:<\/p>\n

Ik vind dat de stiltecoup\u00e9s op dit moment niet voldoende zijn aangeduid. Er moeten meer aanduidingen komen die al bij het binnenkomen duidelijk maken\u00a0dat je in een stiltecoup\u00e9 bent. Alleen wat pictogrammen toevoegen zal niet helpen. De hele sfeer moet veranderen in een rustigere, misschien zelfs bibliotheekachtige sfeer. Daar zou ik me echt op mijn gemak voelen als ik stilte wil hebben. En ik denk ook dat anderen zich eerder aan de stilteregels zouden houden met zo een sfeer.<\/em><\/p>\n

(I think that silent compartment are not indicated sufficiently at the moment. More indications have to come that already make it clear at entrance that you are in a silence compartment. Only adding some icons wil not help. The entire atmosphere has to change into a calmer, maybe even library-like atmosphere. There, I would really feel comfortable if I want silence. And I also think that others will rather comply with the silence rules with such an atmosphere.<\/p>\n
