This year, it is exactly 75 years ago that the\u00a0<em>wederopbouw<\/em>\u00a0(reconstruction)<em>\u00a0<\/em>of Rotterdam started, in 1941. On May 14, 1940, the Germans bombarded the <em>historische <\/em>(historic,\u00a0old) city of Rotterdam, and many\u00a0<em>gebouwen\u00a0<\/em>(buildings) caught fire and also burnt down. 650-900 people lost their lives, 80.000 lost their homes. This also explains why Rotterdam has an extremely modern inner city nowadays.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>De Trap\u00a0<\/em>leads to the roof of the\u00a0<em>Groot Handelsgebouw\u00a0<\/em>(Great Trade Building), one of the first buildings. Around 1000 people can be on the roof at the same time. From the roof, you have a great view over the entire city and its skyline!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The 29 meter (90 ft) high\u00a0<em>steigerconstructie\u00a0<\/em>(scaffolding construction) with 180\u00a0<em>traptreden\u00a0<\/em>(stair steps) only stands for a certain time: it will be removed on June 12.
