But what does it mean?<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<em>Broodje\u00a0<\/em>means a roll, or a bread, with something on it. This is the word that comes right after. So, a\u00a0<em>broodje kaas<\/em>, like in the picture above, is a slice of bread with cheese. It is a\u00a0<em>verzonnen\u00a0<\/em>(made up)\u00a0story that is passed on as\u00a0<em>waar gebeurd\u00a0<\/em>(truly happened). Often, it is unclear who or what the\u00a0<em>bron <\/em>(source) is of these\u00a0stories, and they are more often than not\u00a0<em>sensationeel\u00a0<\/em>(sensational) and\u00a0<em>bizar\u00a0<\/em>(bizarre). They play on people&#8217;s\u00a0<em>angsten\u00a0<\/em>(fears) and\u00a0<em>vooroordelen\u00a0<\/em>(prejudices).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\">2.\u00a0<em>Broodjeaap.\u00a0<\/em>Where does this name come from?<\/h2>\n<div style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theomeder.wordpress.com\/2013\/02\/10\/hoe-broodjeaapverhalen-aan-hun-broodje-aap-kwamen\/\" aria-label=\"Braap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\"  width=\"290\" height=\"375\" \/ alt=\"Braap\" src=\"https:\/\/theomeder.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/02\/braap.jpg?w=710\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The <em>boekje<\/em> (little book) <em>Broodje Aap<\/em> by Ethel Portnoy from 1978.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The name\u00a0<em>broodje aap<\/em>, as we have seen above, does not make a lot of sense by itself. Where does it come from? In 1978, Ethel Portnoy published a\u00a0<em>boekje<\/em> (little book) that bundled stories that can be characterized as\u00a0<em>stadslegendes\u00a0<\/em>(urban legends). She titled the book after one\u00a0<em>broodjeaapverhaal\u00a0<\/em>which claimed\u00a0that\u00a0certain restaurants serve\u00a0<em>broodjes<\/em>\u00a0<em>apenvlees\u00a0<\/em>(breads with monkey meat)!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\">3. What is an example of a\u00a0<em>broodjeaapverhaal<\/em>?<\/h2>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pkBk2zkYqd8<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">So what kind of stories do their rounds? In the video above, Peter Burger, who wrote his PhD on the topic, explains:\u00a0<em>Een van de gekste broodjeaapverhalen die op het ogenblik nog lopen is het verhaal dat inbrekers geheime tekentjes naast de deur zetten. Wat ik fascinerend vind is dat politieagenten, of vooral politieagenten, deze tekens verspreiden<\/em>. (One of the craziest bread with monkey stories that are still running at the moment is the story that burglars put secret marks next to the door. What I find fascinating is that police officers, or especially policer officers spread these marks.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Obviously,\u00a0<em>broodjeaapverhalen\u00a0<\/em>can be quite <em>grappig<\/em> (funny)! But they can also be <em>gevaarlijk<\/em> (dangerous), because what if they are trusted, even though they are not true at all? This can lead to quite some\u00a0<em>verwarring\u00a0<\/em>(confusion)!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But here on this blog, we are safe!
