Whether it is about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/the-ui-conundrum\/\"><em>ui<\/em><\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/the-ui-conundrum\/\">-klank<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(the &#8220;ui&#8221; sound), the<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/the-super-scary-dutch-g\/\">\u00a0<em>G-klank<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>(the &#8220;G&#8221; sound) or other sounds you might have a hard time with. This series, called &#8220;Can You Say This Correctly?&#8221;, is about providing a speech example that I recorded. En we ontwikkelen onze Routekaart op weg naar 100% slaafvrije chocolade.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Tweeduizenddertien (2013): We starten een langetermijnrelatie met twee <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>partnerco\u00f6peraties\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>in Ghana en Ivoorkust, van wie we onze eerste <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>&#8216;bean to bar&#8217;-traceerbare<\/strong><\/span> cacaobonen kopen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Tweeduizendveertien (2014): Naast de <span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Fairtrade premie<\/strong><\/span> betalen we voortaan een extra Tony&#8217;s premie aan de co\u00f6peraties. In totaal gaan we vijfentwintig procent (25%) meer betalen dan de normale cacaoprijs die de boer krijgt.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Tweeduizendvijftien (2015): We starten de samenwerking met een derde co\u00f6peratie en vergroten zo onze impact naar zo&#8217;n twaalfhonderd (1200) boeren. We moeten verder groeien voor nog meer impact, dus <\/em>Tony&#8217;s goes USA<em>! En we vragen jou om met ons mee te doen, want alleen samen kunnen we alle chocolade 100% slaafvrij maken.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">THE TRANSLATION<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ten years Tony&#8217;s<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">We didn&#8217;t sit still!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">2005: The first Tony&#8217;s Chocolonely bar enters the market, after the episodes of the\u00a0<em>Keuringsdienst van Waarde\u00a0<\/em>(= Inspection Authority of Value, a Dutch TV program investigating problems with products) about child slavery on cocoa plantations in West Africa. Milk chocolate in an alarming red wrapping, Fairtrade and &#8216;100% slave-free&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">2007: We learn a hard lesson: Fairtrade appears not to be the same as slave-free. Teun van de Keuken, journalist of the\u00a0<em>Keuringsdienst van Waarde<\/em>, sees in Ghana that the impact of the Fairtrade certification is limited. We change &#8216;100% slave-free&#8217; into &#8216;towards 100% slave-free chocolate&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">2008: The Chocolonely Foundation is founded. In the meantime, 1% of the revenue of Tony&#8217;s Chocolonely goes to projects that support a slave-free chocolate industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">2009: We start the &#8216;Tony&#8217;s in Africa&#8217; project; a study of the cocoa chain and the possibilities to improve the Fairtrade certification.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">2012: Our bar is split unequally, because it is indeed strange that a chocolate bar has equal pieces, even though it is so unequally divided in the chocolate industry! And we develop our Route map towards 100% slave-free chocolate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">2013: We start a long-term relationship with two partner cooperatives\u00a0in Ghana and Ivory Coast, from whom we buy our first &#8216;bean to bar&#8217; traceable cocoa beans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">2o14: Besides the Faitrade premium, we pay an additional Tony&#8217;s premium to the cooperatives from now on. In total, we will pay 25% more than the normal cocoa price that the farmer receives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">2015: We start the cooperation with a third cooperative and enlarge our impact to about 1200 farmers. We have to grow further for an even larger impact, so <em>Tony&#8217;s goes USA<\/em>! Unlike for example in English, where often words are written with spaces in between, in Dutch, words are glued together. Much like in German. But also a little less, which will become clear from the other comments below!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">So, the standard rule in Dutch for\u00a0<em>samenstellingen\u00a0<\/em>is to just glue words together, as long as they are &#8220;real words&#8221; by themselves.\u00a0<em>Cacaoplantage<\/em>,\u00a0<em>chocoladereep<\/em>,\u00a0<em>cacaoboter<\/em>, and so on. However, you can use a <em>streepje\u00a0<\/em>in many cases, just if you want to clarify the\u00a0<em>uitspraak\u00a0<\/em>(pronunciation) of a word. In the case of\u00a0<em>Fairtradecertificering<\/em>, this may not be required, but it still,\u00a0<em>Fairtrade-certificering\u00a0<\/em>is easier to read. Therefore, it is fine to use a <em>streepje<\/em>. Another great example of where a\u00a0<em>streepje\u00a0<\/em>could make a difference, but is not written with one, is the word\u00a0<em>pollepel\u00a0<\/em>(wooden spoon). This does the same as the\u00a0<em>streepje\u00a0<\/em>above in\u00a0<em>chocolade-industrie<\/em>, just that for\u00a0<em>afleidingen<\/em>, a\u00a0<em>trema\u00a0<\/em>is used. Simple as that. The purpose is the same.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In this case, of course\u00a0<em>partnerco<i>\u00f6<\/i>peraties\u00a0<\/em>is a\u00a0<em>samenstelling\u00a0<\/em>of\u00a0<em>partner\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<i>co\u00f6peraties<\/i>. Officially, a\u00a0<em>streepje\u00a0<\/em>is not required, so\u00a0<em>Tony&#8217;s in Afrikaproject\u00a0<\/em>is correct. Also\u00a0<em>bean to bartraceerbare\u00a0<\/em>would be correct, however a\u00a0<em>streepje\u00a0<\/em>is advisable here, since this is an English word group mixed with Dutch, and a\u00a0<em>streepje\u00a0<\/em>can make this distinction clearer. Also, the fact that these are slogans, the\u00a0<em>streepje\u00a0<\/em>makes this clearer. Since\u00a0<em>Tony&#8217;s in Afrika\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>bean to bar\u00a0<\/em>originally don&#8217;t have\u00a0<em>streepjes\u00a0<\/em>in between the words, you shouldn&#8217;t add any.
