At least that\u2019s what you might think when you hear us using so many diminutives. Even though most diminutives in Dutch end with <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2013je, there are still different ways to \u2018make a word smaller\u2019. Some words get extra letters besides \u2013je. Also, most diminutives are used for nouns. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Many words only end with \u2013je, but often there\u2019s a letter or two extra! And the article used with a diminutive is ALWAYS \u2018het\u2019, no matter what article is used with the regular noun form. These are the most common rules but I\u2019ve kept it down a bit to prevent making this more confusing than it really is. If you have questions, please let me know<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">The words that don\u2019t fall under one of the below described categories, end with \u2013je.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Examples:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: small;font-family: Times New Roman\">Het huis &#8211;<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>het huisje (house)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: small;font-family: Times New Roman\">De staaf &#8211;<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>het staafje (stick)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: small;font-family: Times New Roman\">De boot &#8211;<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>het bootje (boat)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Het apparaat &#8211;<span> <\/span>het apparaatje (device)<strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Words that end with: -e, -ou, -ie, -eu, -w and \u2013ee get \u2013tje at the end of the diminutive. <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Examples:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: small;font-family: Times New Roman\">De dame &#8211;<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>het dametje (lady)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: small;font-family: Times New Roman\">De kou &#8211;<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>het koutje (cold)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: small;font-family: Times New Roman\">De kolibrie &#8211;
