But <i>wees gewaarschuwd<\/i>: it&#8217;s not easy.<\/p>\n<p>In the midst of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/the-european-refugee-crisis-in-the-netherlands-de-vluchtelingencrisis\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>vluchtelingencrisis<\/i><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/5-ideas-for-the-empty-vd-locations\/\" target=\"_blank\">European economic recovery<\/a>, most Europeans aren&#8217;t exactly rolling out the red carpet for new arrivals in their cramped countries and even tighter job markets. Many of these words are only used in contexts like the IND, which means you&#8217;re not likely to learn them over drinks with Dutch friends or your daily\u00a0comings and goings. Here&#8217;s a sample of that vocabulary\u00a0you can get started on learning while you explore your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expatica.com\/nl\/visas-and-permits\/Moving-to-the-Netherlands-Guide-to-Dutch-visas-and-permits_101934.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dutch visa options<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><b>De Nederlandse Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst (IND)<\/b><\/i>: the Dutch immigration and naturalisation service, maker and breaker of expat dreams.<\/li>\n<li><i><b>verhuizen<\/b><\/i>: to move residence<\/li>\n<li><i><b>immigreren<\/b><\/i>: to immigrate<\/li>\n<li><i><b>integreren; de integratie<\/b><\/i>: to integrate;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/living-in-the-netherlands-means-integrating\/\" target=\"_blank\">integration<\/a><\/li>\n<li><i><b>inburgeren; de inburgering<\/b><\/i>: to naturalize; <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/why-is-integrating-such-a-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\">acculturation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><i><b>verblijven; het verblijf<\/b><\/i>: to stay, reside; the stay, residence<\/li>\n<li><i><b>vergunnen; de vergunning<\/b><\/i>: to permit; the permit<\/li>\n<li><i><b>de machtiging tot voorlopig verblijf (MVV)<\/b><\/i>: authorization of temporary residence, the visa necessary for entering the country for citizens of countries without visa-free travel to the Netherlands<\/li>\n<li><i><b>de verblijfsvergunning (VVR)<\/b><\/i>: residence permit<\/li>\n<li><i><b>aanvragen; de aanvraag<\/b><\/i>: to request; the request<\/li>\n<li><i><b>indienen<\/b><\/i>: to turn in, submit<\/li>\n<li><i><b>legaliseren<\/b><\/i>: to have legalized (with an apostile)<\/li>\n<li><i><b>verplichten<\/b><\/i>: to require<\/li>\n<li><i><b>het verzoek<\/b><\/i>: the request<\/li>\n<li><i><b>voorwaarden<\/b><\/i>: terms and conditions, provisions<\/li>\n<li><i><b>inkomenseisen<\/b><\/i>: income requirements<\/li>\n<li><i><b>in aanmerking komen<\/b><\/i>: to be qualified for<\/li>\n<li><i><b>de afkomst<\/b><\/i>: descent, origin<\/li>\n<li><i><b>de arbeid<\/b><\/i>: labor<\/li>\n<li><i><b>het verblijfsdoel<\/b><\/i>: purpose of stay<\/li>\n<li><i><b>de loondienst<\/b><\/i>: paid employment<\/li>\n<li><i><b>de tewerkstellingsvergunning (TWV)<\/b><\/i>: work permit<\/li>\n<li><i><b>de vreemdeling<\/b><\/i>: foreigner<\/li>\n<li><i><b>de kennismigrant<\/b><\/i>: knowledge migrant<\/li>\n<li><i><b>hoogopgeleid<\/b><\/i>: highly educated<\/li>\n<li><i><b>het zoekjaar<\/b><\/i>: &#8216;search year&#8217;, a one-year visa allowing certain highly educated migrants to enter the country for one year on simple terms to find and secure employment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Practice your immigration vocabulary and if you&#8217;re feeling brave, show up to your appointment speaking Dutch.
