  1. solliciteren<\/i><\/strong>: The foundation of Dutch work culture is looking for a job, or\u00a0solliciteren<\/em>. During the\u00a0sollicitatieproces\u00a0<\/em>you’ll write a\u00a0sollicitatiebrief<\/em><\/a> to explain your motivation for applying for the vacancy at hand, and if all goes well you’ll be invited for a\u00a0sollicitatiegesprek\u00a0<\/em>to discuss your motivations and qualifications in person.<\/li>\n
  2. MBO\/HBO\/WO werk- en denkniveau<\/i><\/strong>: On most job vacancies, you’ll see a line that specifies a particular\u00a0werk- en denkniveau\u00a0<\/em>that corresponds with a particular level of education in the Netherlands<\/a>.\u00a0WO\u00a0<\/em>stands for\u00a0wetenschappelijk onderwijs\u00a0<\/em>or university,\u00a0HBO\u00a0<\/em>for\u00a0hoger beroepsonderwijs<\/em> or professional\u00a0training, and\u00a0MBO\u00a0<\/em>stands for\u00a0middelbaar beroepsonderwijs<\/em> or vocational training. Each of these education levels is associated with a particular\u00a0werk- en denkniveau<\/em>, a level of professional and intellectual ability.<\/li>\n

The Dutch working culture is notably less hierarchical<\/a> than that of English-speaking countries like the US–Dutch management style tends to be more egalitarian in style, and workers are expected to disagree with their superiors and offer critical feedback\u00a0in meetings and daily work activities.<\/li>\n
