When the cat is away from home, the mice dance on the table<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

If nobody is supervising you (if there is no <\/span>toezicht <\/span><\/i>(supervision), you can do whatever you feel like. The <\/span>kat<\/span><\/i> is in the dominant role. The <\/span>muizen <\/span><\/i>fear the cat, because it hunts them. They have to adapt their behavior so they (quite literally) don\u2019t get caught. So the <\/span>kat<\/span><\/i> is for example an <\/span>ouder <\/span><\/i>(parent) or <\/span>baas <\/span><\/i>(boss). The <\/span>muizen<\/span><\/i> are those under control of the <\/span>kat <\/span><\/i>– <\/span>kinderen <\/span><\/i>(children), <\/span>werknemers <\/span><\/i>(employees), etcetera.<\/span><\/p>\n

Use<\/b><\/p>\n

You can use this <\/span>spreekwoord<\/span><\/i> when somebody does something without <\/span>toezicht<\/span><\/i>. This also applies when it is going behind somebody\u2019s back. <\/span>Example:<\/span><\/p>\n

Toen hun ouders een week op vakantie gingen, gaven David en Karel elke avond een feest. Als de kat van huis is, dansen de muizen op tafel.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

When their parents went on a holiday for a week, David and Karel threw a party every night. If the cat is away from home, the mice dance on the table.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>De hond in de pot vinden<\/b><\/p>\n

To find the dog in the pot<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

This old <\/span>uitdrukking<\/span><\/i> means that you are too late for something. In the sense of the expression, it means that you come <\/span>thuis <\/span><\/i>(home) and already find the <\/span>hond <\/span><\/i>(dog) licking out the leftovers of the <\/span>maaltijd<\/span><\/i> you missed from the <\/span>pot <\/span><\/i>(pot).<\/span><\/p>\n

Use<\/b><\/p>\n

You can use this <\/span>uitdrukking<\/span><\/i> anytime somebody is late for something and is missing out.\u00a0<\/span>Example:<\/p>\n

Floris komt een half uur te laat naar de bioscoop en mist het beste stuk. Hij vindt de hond in de pot!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Floris is half an hour late for the cinema and is missing the best part. He finds the dog in the pot!<\/span><\/p>\n
