Yesterday was a great day for many mothers in the Netherlands – their children gave them presents and thanked them for being such awesome\u00a0moeders\u00a0<\/em>(mothers). You might ask the question\u00a0“maar waarom alleen op \u00e9\u00e9n dag van het jaar?”\u00a0<\/em>(but why only on one day of the year?), and that is a legitimate question. Not one to focus on today, however! Today, I want to talk about\u00a0moederdag\u00a0<\/em>(Mother’s Day) in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

When is it held?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Since\u00a0moederdag\u00a0<\/em>is held at different times in different countries, this is quite a legitimate question. In the Netherlands and many other countries, it is the tweede\u00a0<\/em>zondag van mei\u00a0<\/em>(second sunday of May).<\/p>\n

Where does it come from?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Moederdag\u00a0<\/em>in its current, modern form started in the\u00a0Verenigde Staten\u00a0<\/em>(United States). Anna Marie Jarvis wanted to honor her\u00a0moeder\u00a0<\/em>in 1908, because she had helped\u00a0moeders\u00a0<\/em>in need in the\u00a0burgeroorlog\u00a0<\/em>(Civil War). The idea worked, and since then, the\u00a0tweede zondag van mei<\/em> is\u00a0moederdag<\/em>. It arrived later in Europe, and was held for the first time in the Netherlands in 1925.<\/p>\n

Bijzonder<\/strong><\/em>:\u00a0Moederdag in Antwerpen<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

In\u00a0Antwerpen<\/em> (Antwerp) in Belgium,\u00a0moederdag\u00a0<\/em>is celebrated on a different day: On\u00a015 augustus<\/em> (August 15), the same day as the\u00a0Maria-Tenhemelopneming\u00a0<\/em>(Assumption of Mary). It was first held in 1913, so before the American\u00a0moederdag\u00a0<\/em>had reached Europe. Frans van Kuyck thought that the sociale orde\u00a0<\/em>(social order) was disrupted because of the quick pace of\u00a0modernisering\u00a0<\/em>(modernization). He thought that the oplossing <\/em>(solution) would be to create\u00a0waardigheid van de familie\u00a0<\/em>(worthiness of the family).\u00a0It is only in Antwerp (and in Costa Rica!) that it is held on\u00a015 augustus<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Anyway, what do the Dutch do for their mothers on Mother’s Day?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ontbijt op bed<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n

Ontbijt op bed\u00a0<\/em>(breakfast in bed). I have done that with my brothers so many times for my mom! It is fun to prepare\u00a0ontbijt<\/em> – make\u00a0mama\u00a0<\/em>some\u00a0vers geperste sinaasappelsap\u00a0<\/em>(freshly squeezed orange juice), bake up some\u00a0croissantjes\u00a0<\/em>(croissants), and have some\u00a0zelfgemaakte jam\u00a0<\/em>(self-made marmalade).\u00a0Ze heeft het verdient!<\/em> (She deserves it!)<\/p>\n

Huishouden<\/em><\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

The goal of\u00a0moederdag\u00a0<\/em>is to spoil (verwennen<\/em>) mom a little. It is still mostly the case that\u00a0moeders\u00a0<\/em>do the huishouden<\/em>\u00a0(housework). To give\u00a0mama\u00a0<\/em>some relief of that, many\u00a0kinderen\u00a0<\/em>(children) and\u00a0mannen\u00a0<\/em>(husbands) do it for her!<\/p>\n

Bloemen<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n

The business that’s booming – or rather\u00a0blooming<\/span> – in the week before moederdag<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0bloemen\u00a0<\/em>(flowers)! Many\u00a0moeders\u00a0<\/em>are surprised (although, is it still a\u00a0verassing\u00a0<\/em>(surprise) anymore?) with\u00a0bloemen\u00a0<\/em>from their\u00a0kinderen\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0partner\u00a0<\/em>(partner).<\/p>\n

Iets leuks doen!<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Moederdag\u00a0<\/em>is held on a\u00a0zondag<\/em> – so a lot of people have some free time on that day.\u00a0Ideaal om iets leuks te doen!\u00a0<\/em>(Ideal to do something fun!) Many\u00a0families\u00a0<\/em>(families) go on trips to a\u00a0stad\u00a0<\/em>that the\u00a0moeder\u00a0<\/em>likes, or they do something else she enjoys. That is the point, at least. Why not make it a nice\u00a0familiedag\u00a0<\/em>(family day)?!<\/p>\n
