And so a lot of\u00a0<em>terrassen\u00a0<\/em>(terraces),\u00a0<em>caf\u00e9&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>(caf\u00e9s) and\u00a0<em>bars\u00a0<\/em>(bars) are flooded with people, trying to\u00a0<em>afkoelen\u00a0<\/em>(cool off) a little in the\u00a0<em>zomerse hitte\u00a0<\/em>(Summer heat). Many people are getting drinks to cool off &#8211; but how do you order drinks in Dutch?<\/p>\n<p>So, you decided to hit one of the many little\u00a0terraces (<em>terrasjes<\/em>) in the city, sit down with your friends, and now you have the menu in front of you &#8211; but what can you order?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/x_HpmxR_uZo\" aria-label=\"Photo 1455146106369 1e31beb07fce\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \"  width=\"768\" height=\"513\" \/ alt=\"Photo 1455146106369 1e31beb07fce\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1455146106369-1e31beb07fce?ixlib=rb-0.3.5&amp;q=85&amp;fm=jpg&amp;crop=entropy&amp;cs=srgb&amp;s=6c824dbc051a8e2e208a9d7e18e51842\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Warme dranken\u00a0<\/em>(Hot beverages)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Koffie\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Thee\u00a0<\/em>are often served as a\u00a0<em>kop\u00a0<\/em>(cup), but are sometimes served as\u00a0<em>kan\u00a0<\/em>(pot).<\/p>\n<p><em>Koffie\u00a0<\/em>(Coffee) &#8211; A classic in the Netherlands. A lot of people drink coffee all the time &#8211; sometimes 5 or more cups a day! Especially in the afternoon, it is time for some coffee, often together with some\u00a0<em>cake\u00a0<\/em>(cake) or a\u00a0<em>koekje\u00a0<\/em>(biscuit\/cookie). For the coffee, you need to know <em>zwarte koffie\u00a0<\/em>(black coffee),\u00a0<em>koffie met melk\u00a0<\/em>(coffee with milk),\u00a0<em>koffie met melk en suiker\u00a0<\/em>(coffee with milk and sugar) and\u00a0<em>koffie verkeerd\u00a0<\/em>(wrong coffee). This last one is interesting. It refers to coffee where there is more\u00a0<em>melk\u00a0<\/em>than\u00a0<em>koffie<\/em>, so it is wrong coffee, as it is rather milk with coffee. It is the wrong way around\u00a0<em>(verkeerd om<\/em>). So traditionally, this is just hot milk, not frothed!<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are also\u00a0<em>koffiespecialiteiten\u00a0<\/em>(coffee specialties), such as <em>espresso<\/em>,\u00a0<em>dubbele espresso\u00a0<\/em>(double espresso),\u00a0<em>cappuccino<\/em> or\u00a0<em>la<\/em><em>tte macchiato<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Thee\u00a0<\/em>(Tea) &#8211; A lot of people drink\u00a0<em>thee\u00a0<\/em>as well, though<em> koffie\u00a0<\/em>is definitely drunk more.\u00a0<em>Thee\u00a0<\/em>exists in many varieties, such as\u00a0<em>groene thee\u00a0<\/em>(green tea),\u00a0<em>zwarte thee\u00a0<\/em>(black tea) or <em>witte thee\u00a0<\/em>(white tea). You can also get\u00a0<em>thee\u00a0<\/em>with\u00a0<em>melk<\/em>,\u00a0<em>sojamelk\u00a0<\/em>(soy milk),\u00a0<em>honing\u00a0<\/em>(honey) or\u00a0<em>suiker<\/em>, of course.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Koude dranken\u00a0<\/em>(Cold beverages)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the cold beverages, most\u00a0<em>dranken\u00a0<\/em> come either as\u00a0<em>klein\u00a0<\/em>(small) or\u00a0<em>groot\u00a0<\/em>(large).<\/p>\n<p><em>Bier op de tap \/\u00a0<\/em><em>Bier van het vat\u00a0<\/em>(Beer on tap \/ Beer from the barrel) &#8211; This is\u00a0<em>bier\u00a0<\/em>put on the tap of the bar, and many people think it tastes better than beer from a bottle. Your call!<\/p>\n<p><em>Bier in de fles \u00a0<\/em>(Beer in the bottle) &#8211; This is\u00a0<em>bier\u00a0<\/em>in a bottle that you can get just like that &#8211; in the bottle. Because it is bottled and does not need to be served to a large amount of people, most\u00a0<em>speciaalbieren\u00a0<\/em>(special beers) are bottled, and not\u00a0<em>op de tap<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Wijn\u00a0<\/em>(Wine) &#8211;\u00a0<em>Wijn<\/em>! Of course, available in its different varieties. There is\u00a0<em>rood\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>rode wijn\u00a0<\/em>(red wine),\u00a0<em>wit\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>witte wijn\u00a0<\/em>(white wine) or\u00a0<em>ros\u00e9\u00a0<\/em>(rose wine). Then wine is either\u00a0<em>droog\u00a0<\/em>(dry),\u00a0<em>half-droog\u00a0<\/em>(half dry) or\u00a0<em>zoet\u00a0<\/em>(sweet). Additionally, you can find something like\u00a0<em>BGA\u00a0<\/em>(beschermde geographische aanduiding), or its French term more commonly,\u00a0<em>IGP\u00a0<\/em>(<em>indication g\u00e9ographique prot\u00e9g\u00e9e<\/em>), which refers to an area where certain products are traditionally produced. This indication tells you that this product has been made there! A lot of wines carry such a label.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cocktails\u00a0<\/em>(Cocktails) &#8211; A classic, and mostly, the English terms are used here. You&#8217;ll figure this one out!<\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>Frisdranken\u00a0<\/em>(soda)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>Frisdranken\u00a0<\/em>mostly refer to different kinds of soda, from\u00a0<em>cola\u00a0<\/em>(coke) to\u00a0<em>sinas\u00a0<\/em>(soda with orange taste, such as\u00a0<em>Fanta\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>Orangina<\/em>), to\u00a0<em>Sprite\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>7Up<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Some things you need to know:<\/p>\n<p><em>Fristi\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; Fristi is a sweet, milk-based drink. It comes in different\u00a0<em>smaken\u00a0<\/em>(flavors), but normally comes with the flavor\u00a0<em>rood fruit\u00a0<\/em>(red fruit). It is usually ordered for children.<\/p>\n<p><em>Chocomel \/ Chocolademelk\u00a0<\/em>(Chocomel \/ Chocolate milk) &#8211;\u00a0<em>Chocomel\u00a0<\/em>is the brand name for the best-known chocolate milk in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jus d&#8217;orange \/ Sinaasappelsap\u00a0<\/em>(Orange juice) &#8211; this is just orange juice. Sometimes, the Dutch use the French term\u00a0<em>jus d&#8217;orange<\/em>, or just\u00a0<em>jus<\/em>. If it says\u00a0<em>vers geperst<\/em>, it is freshly squeezed. If you want to know whether it is with\u00a0<em>vruchtvlees\u00a0<\/em>(pulp) or without, just ask.<\/p>\n<p><em>Water\u00a0<\/em>(Water) &#8211;\u00a0<em>Water\u00a0<\/em>comes from different brands in bottled form. What everyone in the Netherlands understands, though, is if you go with the brand\u00a0<em>Spa<\/em>. Order a\u00a0<em>Spa blauw\u00a0<\/em>(Spa blue), and you will get\u00a0<em>water zonder koolzuur\u00a0<\/em>(water without gas), order a\u00a0<em>Spa rood\u00a0<\/em>(Spa red), and you will get\u00a0<em>water met koolzuur\u00a0<\/em>(water with gas).<\/p>\n<p><em>Kraanwater\u00a0<\/em>(Tap water) &#8211;\u00a0<em>Kraanwater\u00a0<\/em>is served for free more and more at restaurants around the country, though there are some places that still want to sell you bottled water or charge a little bit for\u00a0<em>kraanwater<\/em>. (Usually, this will get you the beer on tap in either 0,2L or 0,33L).<\/p>\n<p><em>Ik zou graag een witte wijn willen<\/em>. (I would like to have a white wine).<\/p>\n<p><em>Ik ben er nog niet uit!\u00a0<\/em>(I still haven&#8217;t figured it out!)<\/p>\n<p><em>Ik ben de <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/campaigns-in-nl-3-bob-jij-of-bob-ik\/\">bob<\/a> vandaag, dus ik drink niet. Doe mij maar een koffie verkeerd.\u00a0<\/em>(I am the bob (person that&#8217;s driving) today, so I don&#8217;t drink. Just get me a wrong coffee).<\/p>\n<p>So as you can see, the Dutch are pretty straightforward when it comes to ordering.
