So last week, I discussed how to order drinks in Dutch.<\/a>\u00a0Let’s talk about ordering food today!<\/p>\n

Dietary preferences\"Download\"<\/a><\/h2>\n

The first thing to consider is of course what your dietary preferences are. But what are those?<\/p>\n

Biologisch\u00a0<\/em>– biological, or organic food.<\/p>\n

Vegan \/ veganistisch\u00a0<\/em>– vegan food (you pronounce vegan\u00a0<\/em>the same as in English, by the way!).<\/p>\n

Vegetarisch\u00a0<\/em>– vegetarian food.<\/p>\n

One word that is also often used is\u00a0vega<\/em>. This term usually refers to\u00a0vegan<\/em>, but is sometimes also used for vegetarian dishes. So if it says\u00a0vega<\/em> and you want to be sure, do ask!<\/p>\n

Allergenen –\u00a0<\/em>allergens. There are many different ones, with the top 8 being:\u00a0soja\u00a0<\/em>(soy),\u00a0tarwe\u00a0<\/em>(wheat),\u00a0noten\u00a0<\/em>(tree nuts),\u00a0pinda’s\u00a0<\/em>(peanuts),\u00a0melk\u00a0<\/em>(milk),\u00a0schelpdieren\u00a0<\/em>(shellfish),\u00a0ei<\/em> or\u00a0eieren\u00a0<\/em>(egg or eggs),\u00a0vis\u00a0<\/em>(fish).<\/p>\n

Lactosevrij\u00a0<\/em>\/\u00a0Fructosevrij\u00a0<\/em>\/ Glutenvrij\u00a0<\/em>–\u00a0Lactose-free, fructose-free, gluten-free for the intolerant ones.<\/p>\n

Kleurstoffen<\/em> – food colourings.<\/p>\n

Smaakstoffen\u00a0<\/em>– Flavourings.<\/p>\n

Geurstoffen\u00a0<\/em>– Odorant.<\/p>\n

Natuurlijk\u00a0<\/em>– Natural.<\/p>\n

Kunstmatig\u00a0<\/em>– Artificial.<\/p>\n

Some restaurants advertise with (the lack of) some of the properties above. And the\u00a0menukaarten\u00a0<\/em>(menu’s) are full of them, indicating what you are consuming!<\/p>\n

If it is still unclear what’s in it, though, you can ask something like this:<\/p>\n

Wat zit er precies in dit gerecht? –\u00a0<\/em>What exactly is in this dish?<\/p>\n

Wat is zuurvlees?\u00a0<\/em>– What is zuurvlees\u00a0<\/em>(“sour meat”)?<\/p>\n

Wat is ossenhaas?\u00a0<\/em>– What is ossenhaas\u00a0<\/em>(beef tenderloin)?<\/p>\n

How to do it – formal?<\/h2>\n

\"Download\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Dutch restaurants, formalities are like in normal Dutch life: not that formal! An alstu<\/u>blieft<\/em> is not required, and an alstje<\/u>blieft<\/em> absolutely suffices. Often, you can also say something without even putting \u201cplease\u201d in the sentence.<\/p>\n

Example sentences:<\/p>\n

Ik neem de biefstuk! <\/em>\u2013 I take the steak!<\/p>\n

Kunt u mij alstublieft zout en peper brengen? <\/em>\u2013 Can you bring me salt and pepper, please?<\/p>\n

Voor mij de soep van de dag, alstjeblieft! <\/em>\u2013 The soup of the day for me, please!
\nZit er melk of kaas in het gerecht? <\/em>\u2013 Is there milk or cheese in the dish?<\/p>\n

Ik ben allergisch tegen pinda\u2019s. Kunt u het eten ook zonder pindasaus serveren? <\/em>\u2013 I am allergic against peanuts. Could you also serve the food without peanut sauce?<\/p>\n

Graag<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"Download\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A word you can easily add in any sentence is graag<\/em>, which means \u201cwith pleasure\u201d. It is a sort of way of saying please, or \u201cI\u2019d like\u201d. Example:<\/p>\n

Wilt u nog een mandje met brood? <\/em>\u2013 Would you like to have another bread basket?<\/p>\n

Graag! <\/em>\u2013 Yes, please!<\/p>\n

A question you might get from an ober <\/em>(waiter) is whether the food is good. That will be something like this:<\/p>\n

Smaakt het? <\/em>(Does it taste well?)<\/p>\n

Or more formal:<\/p>\n

Is alles naar wens? <\/em>(Is everything at wish? \/ Is everything alright?)<\/p>\n

Good answers are:<\/p>\n

Ja, hoor! Het is lekker! <\/em>(Yes, yes! It is tasty!)<\/p>\n

Heerlijk! <\/em>(Delicious!)<\/p>\n

Dankuwel. <\/em>(Thank you.)<\/p>\n

Fooi<\/em><\/strong>
\n\"Download\"<\/a><\/h2>\n

Of course, you can give the ober <\/em>a fooi\u00a0<\/em>(tip). However, tipping occurs a bit less than in, for example, the United States. If you decide to give a fooi<\/em>, 10% is a common. Some get it for themselves, but in many cases, the fooi<\/em> is also collected generally and shared among the staff.<\/p>\n
