(using the formal &#8220;u&#8221;)<br \/>\nWaar kom je vandaan? : Where do you come from?<\/p>\n<p>Ik kom uit Amerika. : I come from America.<\/p>\n<p>Waar woon je? : Where do you live\/reside?<br \/>\nIk woon in Amsterdam. : I live in Amsterdam<\/p>\n<p>*Caution!\u00a0 In Dutch, the verb &#8220;leven&#8221; is literally to live, as in the act of being alive and breathing.\u00a0 The verb &#8220;wonen&#8221; is used to describe a place where you have resided.\u00a0 Thus, although &#8220;wonen&#8221; can translate as to live, try to keep it separate in your head by thinking of &#8220;wonen&#8221; as I resided in.\u00a0 It sounds a bit formal and stuffy in English, but it makes all the difference in daily conversation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0 Asking someone&#8217;s nationality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ben je Fins? : Are you Finnish?<br \/>\nNee, ik ben niet Fins.
