You can try, but it will never be a completely accurate translation that catches its meaning. Such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/untranslatable-dutch-words-de-zesjescultuur\/\"><em>Zesjescultuur\u00a0<\/em>post<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/untranslatable-dutch-pottenkijkers\/\"><em>Pottenkijker\u00a0<\/em>post<\/a>\u00a0or the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/untranslatable-dutch-komkommertijd\/\"><em>Komkommertijd <\/em>post<\/a>.\u00a0In the Untranslatable Dutch posts, we will explore Dutch words that cannot be simply translated to English. Founded in 1602, it would help make the Dutch a very wealthy, colonial power, especially through spice trade. This left traces in the Dutch language too, such as\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/versterkende-bijvoeglijke-naamwoorden-pebbles-and-cats-are-super\/\">peperduur<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(&#8216;as expensive as pepper&#8217; &#8211; very expensive). It also initiated the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/the-gouden-eeuw-a-golden-time-for-the-dutch\/\"><em>Gouden Eeuw\u00a0<\/em>in the Netherlands<\/a>, a very prosperous time in the country in a wide variety of sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, the VOC had a certain mentality that is worth preserving. The term was coined in 2006 by then-prime minister Jan-Peter Balkenende.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Balkenende voc metaliteit\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mBN8xJby2b8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It was a reaction to politician Femke Halsema about the\u00a0<em>economische opleving\u00a0<\/em>(economic recovery).<\/p>\n<p>What he says:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Ik begrijp niet waarom u hier zo negatief en vervelend over doet. (&#8230;) Laten we blij zijn met elkaar! Laten wij optimistisch zijn! Laten we zeggen: Nederland kan het weer! Die\u00a0<b>VOC-mentaliteit<\/b>, over grenzen heen kijken, dynamiek! Toch?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(I don&#8217;t understand why you are so negative and pesky about this. (&#8230;) Let&#8217;s be happy with each other! Let&#8217;s be optimistic! Let&#8217;s say: The Netherlands can do it again! That\u00a0<strong>VOC mentality<\/strong>, looking beyond borders, dynamic! Wouldn&#8217;t you say?)<\/p>\n<p>What he meant is that the VOC was a company that had\u00a0<em>handelsgeest\u00a0<\/em>(a trader&#8217;s spirit),\u00a0<em>daadkracht\u00a0<\/em>(decisiveness) and\u00a0<em>durf\u00a0<\/em>(dare). It was criticized by many, because the VOC is also associated with\u00a0<em>rooftochten\u00a0<\/em>(raids),\u00a0<em>kolonisatie\u00a0<\/em>(colonialism) and\u00a0<em>slavernij\u00a0<\/em>(slavery).
