Here in the Netherlands, we frequently experience\u00a0onweer\u00a0<\/em>(thunderstorms) between the hot days. Just last Friday, we experienced heavy\u00a0regenbuien\u00a0<\/em>(rain showers) and\u00a0onweer\u00a0<\/em>in some areas. And it often hits quite\u00a0plotseling\u00a0<\/em>(suddenly). So what to do in an\u00a0onweer –\u00a0<\/em>or, perhaps more apt, what to avoid? Here are 3 things to avoid in a Dutch\u00a0onweer<\/em>.<\/p>\n

1. Buiten zijn<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The\u00a0ANWB\u00a0<\/em>(the “Royal Dutch Touring Club”, mostly known for its work as\u00a0Wegenwacht\u00a0<\/em>(road assistance) has some tips<\/a> for what to do in an\u00a0onweer<\/em>. Do you hear any\u00a0donderen\u00a0<\/em>(thunder)? Even if it is\u00a0droog<\/em> (dry), the\u00a0ANWB\u00a0<\/em>advises you to expect it to be\u00a0gevaarlijk\u00a0<\/em>(dangerous). So do not be outside, if possible!<\/p>\n

2. Staan bij bliksem<\/em><\/h2>\n

What happens if a\u00a0bliksem\u00a0<\/em>(lightning) will\u00a0inslaan\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0(impact) imminently around you? And how would you even know that?<\/p>\n

You can actually sense that a\u00a0blikseminslag\u00a0<\/em>(lightning strike) is imminent. If you can feel that\u00a0your\u00a0haartjes\u00a0<\/em>(little hairs) on your\u00a0armen\u00a0<\/em>(arms) go up, and you get a\u00a0statisch gevoel\u00a0<\/em>(static feeling) – then you can\u00a0ervan uitgaan\u00a0<\/em>(expect) that\u00a0bliksem\u00a0<\/em>will inslaan\u00a0<\/i>in your\u00a0directe omgeving\u00a0<\/em>(immediate vicinity). Because bliksem <\/em>likely hits the tallest place, you should try making yourself as small as possible – and not stand! Especially never stand below a tree – those are much higher than you!<\/p>\n

3. Zwemmen!<\/em><\/h2>\n

Do not go\u00a0zwemmen\u00a0<\/em>(swimming) during an\u00a0onweer<\/em>! That is very dangerous! In fact, there are lots of places to avoid. Belgian website meteo.be gives\u00a0donders goede tips om je tegen de bliksem te beschermen\u00a0<\/em>(bloody good tips to protect yourself against lightning).\u00a0Donders\u00a0<\/em>is the pun here – It refers to\u00a0donder\u00a0<\/em>(thunder), but also\u00a0donders<\/em>, which means something like “very” or “bloody”. They have some places listed to avoid:<\/p>\n

– Open water zoals vijvers en zwembaden\u00a0 <\/em>(open water such as ponds and swimming pools)
\n– Hoogtes zoals de toppen van heuvels en bergen of uitzichtspunten <\/em>(high points such as hill tops, mountains or observation points)
\n– Bosranden <\/em>(forest edges)
\n– Ramen (ook gesloten ramen) <\/em>(windows (also closed windows)
\n– Omheiningen (ook niet-metalen), bedradingen of leidingen <\/em>(fencing (also non-metal ones), wiring or pipes)
\n– Boten en tenten <\/em>(boats and tents)
\n– Hoge gebouwen en torens, alleenstaande bomen <\/em>(high buildings and towers, isolated trees)
\n– Open vlakten <\/em>(open plains)
\n– Metalen constructies <\/em>(metal constructions)<\/p>\n

That is a lot to think about – basically no metal or anything that has the remote capability to attract a blikseminslag<\/em>.\u00a0So don’t be in those places!<\/p>\n

So what do I do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

So the three things above are not great things to do in an\u00a0onweer<\/em>. So what should you do? Here are some tips.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. You are outside? What you can do best is to go\u00a0naar binnen\u00a0<\/em>(inside), and to make sure that you find\u00a0a\u00a0schuilplaats\u00a0<\/em>(shelter) in an\u00a0afgesloten\u00a0<\/em>(enclosed) space. And h<\/em>oud ramen en deuren gesloten\u00a0<\/em>(keep windows and doors closed)!<\/li>\n
  2. You cannot go inside immediately? Is a bliksem\u00a0<\/em>impact near you imminent? Then\u00a0you should\u00a0gehurkt zitten\u00a0<\/em>(squat down), voeten tegen elkaar\u00a0<\/em>(feet against each other), making as little contact with the\u00a0grond\u00a0<\/em>(floor) as possible, and making yourself as small as possible. So:\u00a0niet blijven staan\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(don’t keep standing!)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
