If you go to the Netherlands and you walk through any residential area, you cannot really escape them: The super-obvious\u00a0NEE-NEE-sticker\u00a0<\/em>or the\u00a0NEE-JA-<\/em>sticker\u00a0<\/em>on people’s\u00a0brievenbussen\u00a0<\/em>(mailboxes). What are these for? Let’s dive in.<\/p>\n

Folders, folders, folders…<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n

As we have discussed before<\/a>, many places in the Netherlands distribute a load of\u00a0<\/span>folders\u00a0<\/em>(ad brochures) from supermarkets and local stores every single day. <\/span>They can be useful to find the latest deals. There are also\u00a0<\/span>huis aan huisbladen\u00a0<\/em>(house-to-house brochures), which tell you what is going on in your neighborhood and report on some recent (local) news.<\/span><\/p>\n

But maybe you find the deals online, or you simply don’t care. And maybe you find your news online or talk to your neighbors and don’t want to get all this unnecessary paperwork. In that case, these stickers are for you.<\/p>\n

Stickers as protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Dutch\u00a0overheid\u00a0<\/em>(government) provides these stickers, and you can get them at your\u00a0gemeente\u00a0<\/em>(municipality). There are two\u00a0soorten\u00a0<\/em>(kinds):<\/p>\n

NEE-NEE-sticker<\/em>\u00a0– with this sticker, you will neither receive any\u00a0ongeadresseerd reclamedrukwerk\u00a0<\/em>(unaddressed advertisement printed material) nor\u00a0huis aan huisbladen.<\/em><\/p>\n

NEE-JA-sticker\u00a0<\/em>– with this sticker, you will not receive any\u00a0ongeadresseerd reclamedrukwerk<\/em>, but you will receive\u00a0huis aan huisbladen<\/em>.<\/p>\n

So you just go to your\u00a0gemeente\u00a0<\/em>or you get them online – at the aptly named\u00a0neeneeneeja.nl.<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>Of course you can get them from anywhere, since they do not have to have a very exact look, and they are so widespread that everyone knows what they mean.<\/p>\n

You might think now: These stickers are everywhere, so clearly people do not want this sort of mail – why not just ban it altogether? A recent initiative in Amsterdam did exactly that. And now, instead of having to pay for a sticker to prevent this\u00a0onaangename\u00a0<\/em>(inconvenient)\u00a0post\u00a0<\/em>(mail), you can now get the\u00a0JA-JA-sticker\u00a0<\/em>for free<\/a>. Once you put that on your\u00a0brievenbus<\/em>, you will receive everything. Mostly it is done because 50% of all folders\u00a0<\/em>that are delivered are thrown away immediately, and that is just a waste of resources!
