What&#8217;s going on in this city? Well, it is actually a quite special, long-standing tradition!<\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>De Heiligdomsvaart<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Plechtige Opening van de Heiligdomsvaart  te Maastricht 2018\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hrDxQxioK2s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Heiligdomsvaart\u00a0<\/em>is an event that currently runs in Maastricht for 10 days in honor of the <em>stadsheilige\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;city saint&#8221; &#8211; patron) <em>Sint Servaas<\/em>. It started last week, on Thursday, May 24, and it runs until Sunday, June 3. There is an extensive\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.heiligdomsvaartmaastricht.nl\/nl\/programma-c\"><em>programma\u00a0<\/em>(schedule)<\/a>, with different daily activities. What makes it special is that it runs only once every 7 years, and this is the 55th edition! While that implies that this event goes back 385 years, it is actually presumed that it was organized for the first time in 1391, or even earlier! The reason why there was a break were (threats of)\u00a0<em>oorlogen\u00a0<\/em>(wars), but also a reduced enthusiasm for this Catholic tradition due to the\u00a0<em>Reformatie\u00a0<\/em>(reformation).<\/p>\n<p>During the event, there are two\u00a0<em>processies<\/em>, also called\u00a0<em>ommegangen\u00a0<\/em>(a &#8220;walk around&#8221;). The first one is on the first Sunday (this year May 27) and the second on the second Sunday (this year June 3). This second\u00a0<em>ommegang\u00a0<\/em>also signals the end of the\u00a0<em>feestelijkheden\u00a0<\/em>(festivities). During these <em>processies<\/em>, the main\u00a0<em>relieken\u00a0<\/em>(relics) and\u00a0<em>beelden\u00a0<\/em>(sculptures) are carried through the city on\u00a0<em>draagbaren\u00a0<\/em>(stretchers).<\/p>\n<p>Every <em>heiligdomsvaart\u00a0<\/em>has its own theme. And he happened to be the\u00a0<em>bisschop van Maastricht\u00a0<\/em>(bishop of Maastricht). His\u00a0<em>graf\u00a0<\/em>(grave) is inside the\u00a0<em>Sint-Servaasbasiliek\u00a0<\/em>(Saint Servaas Basilica). While there are some l<em>egenden\u00a0<\/em>(legends) about his life and certain events that were\u00a0<em>toegeschreven\u00a0<\/em>(attributed) to him, there is no\u00a0<em>zekerheid\u00a0<\/em>(certainty) about this. His impact for Maastricht was mostly that a lot of the inner city center is shaped by buildings related to the\u00a0<em>Sint-Servaasbasiliek.\u00a0<\/em>Due to the fact that he was a\u00a0<em>beschermheilige\u00a0<\/em>(patron), he attracted a lot of\u00a0<em>bedevaarders\u00a0<\/em>(pilgrims).<\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>Heiligdomsvaart<\/em> by children!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kinderen houden eigen heiligdomsvaart\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O6tsdGmzGlA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This year, children from 5\u00a0<em>basisscholen\u00a0<\/em>(elementary schools) decided to hold their own <em>processie\u00a0<\/em>(procession). Instead of carrying holy artifacts, they had collected\u00a0<em>eten\u00a0<\/em>(food) for the\u00a0<em>voedselbank\u00a0<\/em>(food bank)!
