So everybody wants just one, simple thing:\u00a0<em>Afkoeling!\u00a0<\/em>(cooling down!). The Dutch search it in the cool\u00a0water of the\u00a0<em>Noordzee\u00a0<\/em>(North Sea), and many at the\u00a0<em>strand van Scheveningen\u00a0<\/em>(beach of Scheveningen). Because the beach became so famous, the name is now synonymous with the\u00a0<em>strand<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The oldest records that supposedly refer to the small fisher&#8217;s town are from the\u00a0<em>12de eeuw\u00a0<\/em>(12th century). It expanded later, perhaps due to the high <em>vraag\u00a0<\/em>(demand) for\u00a0<em>vis\u00a0<\/em>(fish)\u00a0of the nobility in the upcoming <em>Den Haag\u00a0<\/em>at the time.\u00a0However, the\u00a0<em>strand\u00a0<\/em>was established only in 1818 &#8211; so what is behind that? In 1820, this was transformed into a stone structure. This was then bought by the\u00a0<em>gemeente\u00a0<\/em>(municipality)\u00a0<em>Den Haag\u00a0<\/em>and turned into the\u00a0<em>Stedelijk Badhuis\u00a0<\/em>(Municipal Bathhouse). It was then turned into a hotel and then the\u00a0<em>Kurhaus\u00a0<\/em>was built, which stood the test of time and is still a hotel today. The name\u00a0<em>Kurhaus\u00a0<\/em>means something like &#8220;spa house&#8221; or &#8220;health resort&#8221; in German, and translated to Dutch would be\u00a0<em>kuurhuis.<\/em>\u00a0It is not entirely clear why the name of the building is German, but this may be related to the fact that the architects Henkenhaf and Ebert were German.<\/p>\n<p>And the establishment of this first\u00a0<em>badhuis\u00a0<\/em>(bathhouse) made the beach of Scheveningen a <em>badplaats\u00a0<\/em>(bathing place), which to this day draws many visitors from all over the world!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>200 years Scheveningen &#8211;\u00a0<em>een jaar lang feest!<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Feest op Scheveningen: badplaats bestaat 200 jaar!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M7jLrCSzYqc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The anniversary of the Scheveningen is celebrated with many\u00a0<em>verschillende\u00a0<\/em>(different)\u00a0<em>evenementen\u00a0<\/em>(events), from the finish of the Volvo Ocean Race to the Red Bull Knock Out Race to the International Fireworks Festival. <a href=\"https:\/\/scheveningen.com\/nl\/evenementen.php\">Here you can find the complete schedule in Dutch.<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scheveningen.com\/en\/events.php\">And here in English.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0year-long\u00a0<em>feest\u00a0<\/em>(celebration) is\u00a0<em>onderverdeeld\u00a0<\/em>(sub-divided) into five\u00a0<em>thema&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>(themes):<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>Historie aan zee <\/em>(history at the sea) displays history on\u00a0<em>badcultuur\u00a0<\/em>(bathing culture) and\u00a0<em>badmode\u00a0<\/em>(swimwear).<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>Stad aan zee\u00a0<\/em>(city at the sea) connects the beach with the\u00a0<em>binnenstad\u00a0<\/em>(inner city) of Scheveningen.<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>Elke dag aan zee<\/em>\u00a0(every day at the sea) shows why you could visit Scheveningen every single day of the year.<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>Toekomst aan zee<\/em>\u00a0(future at the sea) looks forward to (possible) developments of the beach town.<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>Groots aan zee\u00a0<\/em>(big at the sea)\u00a0with large-scale public events.<\/p>\n<p>It all started with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/dutch-cool-off-with-niewjaarsduik\/\"><em>nieuwjaarsduik\u00a0<\/em>(New Year&#8217;s dive)<\/a>, on January 1.
