From the age of 5, it is\u00a0<em>verplicht\u00a0<\/em>(mandatory), from the age of 4, it is\u00a0<em>toegestaan\u00a0<\/em>(allowed). This includes\u00a0<em>kinderen\u00a0<\/em>(children) of\u00a0<em>niet-Nederlandse nationaliteit\u00a0<\/em>(non-Dutch nationality),\u00a0<em>asielzoekers\u00a0<\/em>(asylum seekers) in the\u00a0<em>leerplichtige leeftijd\u00a0<\/em>(mandatory education age) and even\u00a0<em>kinderen\u00a0<\/em>that live in the country\u00a0<em>illegaal\u00a0<\/em>(illegally) have to go to school. So in all those cases, it is required that you are\u00a0<em>ingeschreven\u00a0<\/em>(registered) at a <em>school<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And you are\u00a0<em>verplicht\u00a0<\/em>(required) to go to school until you are 18, or until you gained a\u00a0<em>startkwalificatie\u00a0<\/em>(starting qualification) at the age of 16.<\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>Er is er een jarig, hoera!<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_5790\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5790\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5790\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/09\/kleuter-verjaardag-1024x707.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/09\/kleuter-verjaardag-1024x707.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/09\/kleuter-verjaardag-350x242.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/09\/kleuter-verjaardag-768x530.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image from Unsplash.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There is something interesting at the start of the\u00a0<em>schoolcarri\u00e8re\u00a0<\/em>(school career) of the\u00a0<em>kind,\u00a0<\/em>though.<\/p>\n<p>A child can already\u00a0<em>wennen\u00a0<\/em>(get used to) the\u00a0<em>basisschool\u00a0<\/em>(elementary school) from 3 years and 10 months old for up to 5 days. So that is quite early! These 5 days are also called\u00a0a\u00a0<em>kennismakingsperiode\u00a0<\/em>(introduction period). Not all\u00a0<em>scholen\u00a0<\/em>(schools) have it, though. Some <em>scholen\u00a0<\/em>offer such a\u00a0<em>kennismakingsperiode\u00a0<\/em>just a few days before the birthday of the\u00a0<em>kind\u00a0<\/em>(child).<\/p>\n<p>Only when the child turns 4, so on their\u00a0<em>verjaardag<\/em> (birthday), they can\u00a0 start! And the interesting thing: they can enter the school\u00a0<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">on their birthday<\/span><\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>So, if the\u00a0<em>kind\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0<em>geregistreerd\u00a0<\/em>(registered), they can go to school the next day. Of course, they can also wait another year, because it is required when the child turns 5. So when the\u00a0<em>kind\u00a0<\/em>then enters\u00a0<em>groep 1\u00a0<\/em>(group 1), it could be that there are\u00a0<em>kinderen\u00a0<\/em>in there that have an age difference of more than a year!<\/p>\n<p>Quite interesting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work in your country?
