What does it mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Verjaardag\u00a0<\/em>means “birthday”. However, it does not have the same exact meaning. Whereas the birthday\u00a0<\/em>refers to the day on which you were born, the Dutch word refers to the day on which you\u00a0verjaart<\/em>.\u00a0Verjaren\u00a0<\/em>is a verb that means “to lapse” or “to become out-of-date”, so for example:<\/p>\n

De coupon is niet meer geldig, omdat hij is verjaard.<\/em><\/p>\n

The coupon is no longer valid, as it’s become out-of-date.<\/p>\n

You would also use it for crimes that are no longer prosecuted because of their limitation:<\/p>\n

Het misdrijf heeft een verjaring van 15 jaar.<\/em><\/p>\n

The crime has a limitation of 15 years.<\/p>\n

And yes, you can also use the verb\u00a0verjaren\u00a0<\/em>to indicate your birthday:<\/p>\n

Ik ga morgen verjaren!<\/em><\/p>\n

I am celebrating my birthday tomorrow!<\/p>\n

Mijn verjaring vindt morgen plaats.<\/em><\/p>\n

My birthday is taking place tomorrow.<\/p>\n

In practice, you would rarely say this, and instead say:<\/p>\n

Ik ga morgen mijn verjaardag vieren!<\/em><\/p>\n

I am going to celebrate my birthday tomorrow!<\/p>\n

Mijn verjaardag is morgen.<\/em><\/p>\n

My birthday is tomorrow.<\/p>\n

So when you say “verjaardag”, you really talk about the day on which you “lapse a year”, like you are closing off the year you just had and you are entering a new one.<\/p>\n

However, there are no special traditions related to this that are any different from an English “birthday”. The Dutch also celebrate their birth and look back and forward on their\u00a0verjaardag!<\/em><\/p>\n

We do also have the word\u00a0geboortedag\u00a0<\/em>(day of birth), which specifically refers to the day on which you were born.<\/p>\n

This month, my grandmother is celebrating her 90th\u00a0verjaardag<\/em>! Quite a big deal, and so it deserves to be the word of the month.\u00a0Gefeliciteerd met je verjaardag, oma!\u00a0<\/em>(Happy birthday, grandma!)<\/p>\n
