It\u2019s vakantietijd <\/em>(holiday time)! Time to get your Caravan <\/em>(caravan, trailer), get your vakantiekaas <\/em>(holiday cheese) and off you go to Southern France. But what do you take with you?<\/p>\n

You know about traffic games. In the Netherlands, we usually do them in files <\/em>(traffic jams), and so they\u2019re called filespelletjes <\/em>(traffic jam games). One of them is Ik ga op reis en ik neem mee <\/em>(I am going to travel and I\u2019ll take with me). The first speler <\/em>(player) says an item, then the next says that item and another, different one. And so on! The speler <\/em>that forgets an item in the chain is out of the spel <\/em>(game), until the last speler <\/em>is standing. Let\u2019s see it:<\/p>\n

Bas: Ik ga op reis en ik neem mee\u2026 een handdoek!<\/em><\/p>\n

Marit: Ik ga op reis en ik neem mee\u2026 een handdoek en een badmuts.<\/em><\/p>\n

Jos: Ik ga op reis en ik neem mee\u2026 een handdoek, een badmuts en een plakje kaas.<\/em><\/p>\n

Marit: Een plakje kaas?!<\/em><\/p>\n

Bas: Ik ga op reis en ik neem mee\u2026 Een handdoek, een plakje kaas en een fiets.<\/em><\/p>\n

Jos: Je bent wat vergeten, Bas! Je ligt uit het spel.<\/em><\/p>\n

(Bas: I am going to travel and I\u2019ll take with me\u2026 a towel<\/p>\n

Marit: I am going to travel and I\u2019ll take with me\u2026 a towel and a bathing cap.<\/p>\n

Jos: I am going to travel and I\u2019ll take with me\u2026 a towel, a bathing cap and a slice of cheese.<\/p>\n

Marit: A slice of cheese?!<\/p>\n

Bas: I am going to travel and I\u2019ll take with me\u2026 A towel, a slice of cheese and a bike.<\/p>\n

Jos: You forgot something, Bas! You\u2019re out of the game.)<\/p>\n

As you can see, you can even come up with some rather crazy things, like cheese! The sky is the limit with this spelletje<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Dutch have their own ontbijttradities <\/em>(breakfast traditions)<\/a> that they are hard-pressed to give up, even on vakantie<\/em>. And so the Dutch gaan op reis en nemen mee\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Hagelslag<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The famous Dutch chocolate sprinkles for your buttered toast are simply not to come by outside of the Netherlands. Maybe you find the regular hagelslag<\/em> in the baking aisle. But vlokken<\/em>? Kwinkslag<\/em>? Fruithagel<\/em>? Muisjes<\/em>? No way. So you gotta take it with you.<\/p>\n

Kaas<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Or the Dutch kaas <\/em>(cheese). Gouda and Edam are world-famous cheese varieties and available everywhere \u2013 but you can\u2019t compare it with the quality you get from Dutch cows. And so, that vakantiekaas <\/em>has to come along.<\/p>\n

Pindakaas<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Pindakaas <\/em>(peanut butter) as the Dutch do it\u2026 It is hard to come by. From 100% Pindakaas<\/em>, which is simply ground noten <\/em>(nuts) to special varieties like Pindakaas Karamel-Zeezout <\/em>(Peanut butter Caramel Sea Salt). The Dutch LOVE their pindakaas<\/em>. And this sort of variety elsewhere? Nope. So put it in your koffer <\/em>(suitcase).<\/p>\n
