And besides money for\u00a0<em>onderwijs\u00a0<\/em>(education),\u00a0<em>zorg\u00a0<\/em>(healthcare) or\u00a0<em>infrastructuur\u00a0<\/em>(infrastructure), there is always something about\u00a0<em>koopkracht<\/em>. What is that, and why does it matter? Quite literally.\u00a0It is a\u00a0<em>samenstelling\u00a0<\/em>(compound word) of\u00a0<em>kopen\u00a0<\/em>(to buy, purchase) and <em>kracht\u00a0<\/em>(power). It is used to refer to what people are able to buy with their\u00a0<em>geld\u00a0<\/em>(money). Depending on\u00a0<em>inflatie\u00a0<\/em>(inflation) and\u00a0<em>inkomensstijging\u00a0<\/em>(income increase), the\u00a0<em>koopkracht\u00a0<\/em>either goes\u00a0<em>vooruit\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;forward&#8221;, up) or\u00a0<em>achteruit\u00a0<\/em>(backward, down).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Relevance to September<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Koopkracht dit, koopkracht dat, maar wat is het? - RTL NIEUWS\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fWfImfW4MLM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As said in the introduction, the\u00a0<em>derde dinsdag in<\/em> <em>september<\/em>, or\u00a0<em>Prinsjesdag<\/em>, is an important day. The <em>Minister van Financien <\/em>(Minister of Finance) presents the\u00a0<em>Miljoenennota\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;Million&#8217;s Account&#8221;). The\u00a0<em>Miljoenennota\u00a0<\/em>is an explanation about the\u00a0<em>inkomsten\u00a0<\/em>(revenue) and\u00a0<em>uitgaven\u00a0<\/em>(expenses) of the country in the coming year. Every year again, they discuss the\u00a0<em>koopkracht<\/em>. And almost every time, they somehow find a way to make it positive news for the <em>bevolking <\/em>(people)!<\/p>\n<p>This year, they wrote the following about the\u00a0<em>koopkracht<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Voor de meeste huishoudens wordt in 2020 een koopkrachtstijging verwacht. In 2019 stijgt de koopkracht naar verwachting met 1,2 procent en in 2020 met 2,1 procent. Met name werkenden gaan er volgend jaar sterk op vooruit. Hun koopkracht stijgt met 2,4 procent.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(An increase in\u00a0<em>koopkracht\u00a0<\/em>is expected for most households in 2020. In 2019, the\u00a0<em>koopkracht\u00a0<\/em>will increase by an expected 1.2 percent and in 2020 by 2.1 percent. Especially employed people will get ahead next year. Their\u00a0<em>koopkracht\u00a0<\/em>increases by 2.4 percent.)<\/p>\n<p>Of course, these are always\u00a0<em>verwachtingen\u00a0<\/em>(expectations) and\u00a0<em>schattingen\u00a0<\/em>(estimations). There can be no guarantee that any of this will actually materialize, since the government only has limited power to influence this.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, Dutch politicians like to use the term\u00a0<em>koopkracht\u00a0<\/em>and present positive estimates about it.
