Yesterday, Karoly wrote about paddestoelenseizoen \u00a0<\/em>(mushroom season) in the Netherlands<\/a>. A wonderful time of the year, with some delicious\u00a0recepten\u00a0<\/em>(recipes) and\u00a0maaltijden\u00a0<\/em>(dishes). And while mushrooms have some weird names like\u00a0hanekam\u00a0<\/em>(literally “cockscomb”, chanterelle mushrooms), oesterzwam<\/em> (oyster mushroom) or hoorn van overvloed\u00a0<\/em>(horn of abundance), there is one that is\u00a0really<\/span> quite curious:\u00a0Eekhoorntjesbrood<\/em>!<\/p>\n

While the full name of this paddestoel <\/em>(mushroom) is Gewoon Eekhoorntjesbrood<\/em>, you can leave the gewoon <\/em>away unless you plan a career in mushroom naming.\u00a0Eekhoorntjesbrood <\/em>(penny bun, or just porcini mushrooms) literally means “squirrel bread”. But what did this little\u00a0paddestoel\u00a0<\/em>do to receive such a cool name? Is it simply because squirrels like to eat these mushrooms, like it’s their bread and butter?<\/p>\n

Well, kind of. It is not just\u00a0eekhoorns\u00a0<\/em>(squirrels) that like eating this\u00a0paddestoel<\/em>. Also\u00a0muizen\u00a0<\/em>(mice) and\u00a0ratten<\/em> (rats) like to get a bite.<\/p>\n

Ok, so that’s the eekhoorntjes <\/em>part. But what about the brood<\/em>?<\/p>\n

Also quite simple: The top of the\u00a0paddestoel\u00a0<\/em>looks like a\u00a0bolletje\u00a0<\/em>(bread roll)!<\/p>\n

So there you go – the origin of the name of this curious word!<\/p>\n

Not so hard. Though not everybody seems to think about it that way…<\/p>\n

The children’s TV program Het Klokhuis\u00a0<\/em><\/a> made their own theory:\u00a0Eekhoorntjes\u00a0<\/em>claim that these\u00a0paddestoelen\u00a0<\/em>are theirs, and anyone trying to take them away is getting attacked! Let this\u00a0kok\u00a0<\/em>(chef) tell you all about it:<\/p>\n
