Every year again in December, it is time for the Top 2000. If you’re Dutch, that should ring a bell! For days on end, the best\u00a0nummers\u00a0<\/em>(tracks) are played on NPO Radio 2. And millions of people tune in to this\u00a0lijst der lijsten\u00a0<\/em>(list of the lists) every year.<\/p>\n

The Top 2000 Caf\u00e9<\/em>, built specifically for this radio program. It is featured since 2010, and is open for free to the public. However, due to its small size, only a limited number of people can be inside at any given time. The first week of December constitutes the\u00a0stemweek\u00a0<\/em>(voting week), in which people are able to vote online on their Top 2000 songs –\u00a0ever<\/em>. In the last week of the year, starting\u00a0eerste kerstdag\u00a0<\/em>(First Christmas Day), December 25,\u00a0the radiostation\u00a0<\/em>(radio station) NPO Radio 2 plays all 2000, without interruption but for some ads and an hourly news cycle, up to the very last seconds of the year on oudejaarsavond <\/em>(“old year’s evening” – New Year’s Eve)!<\/p>\n

In 1999, Radio 2 did this for the first time, and it was a massive success. They then decided to repeat it\u00a0jaarlijks\u00a0<\/em>(annually). While voting back then was still done on paper lists in physical locations throughout the country, it is possible these days to vote online<\/a>. This allowed the possibility to even put\u00a0liedjes\u00a0<\/em>(songs) on the list that weren’t there before, allowing many new entries.<\/p>\n

But why is it called Top 2000? Who had it in their right mind to suggest a list of\u00a02000<\/strong><\/em> songs?! Well, initially, in 1999, the idea was to introduce the new millenium (the 2000s) with the best 2000 songs ever made. That’s where that number comes from.<\/p>\n
