It is different from\u00a0<em>herinneren\u00a0<\/em>(to remember, to recollect) that the latter is what you can recollect of an experience you&#8217;ve went through.\u00a0<em>Herdenken <\/em>does not require that. The noun\u00a0<em>herdenking\u00a0<\/em>specifically refers to an event where something is\u00a0<em>herdacht\u00a0<\/em>(remembered). Here&#8217;s the Van Dale definition:<\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"gb6\">plechtigheid<\/span><\/em><span class=\"gh\"><em> waarbij iem. of iets herdacht wordt\u00a0<\/em>(ceremony where sb. or something is remembered)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Relevance to January<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Auschwitz 75 jaar bevrijd: Wie waren de kampbeulen? | NU.nl\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TarHlTz_f2o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It was a month of looking back, of remembering and of thoughtfulness. Apart from several devastating events with life lost as a consequence, one of the worst atrocities in human history was also remembered, just yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>On January 27, 1945, the Russians liberated\u00a0<em>concentratiekamp\u00a0<\/em>(concentration camp)\u00a0<em>Auschwitz-Birkenau\u00a0<\/em>in present-day Poland. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives here due to the horrific deeds of the Nazis over the entire period of the\u00a0<em>Tweede Wereldoorlog\u00a0<\/em>(Second World War). Among them, tens of thousands were Dutch. Anne Frank, who is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/the-canon-of-the-netherlands\/\">Dutch Canon<\/a>, was also sent to Auschwitz after first being imprisoned in\u00a0<em>Kamp Westerbork\u00a0<\/em>(camp Westerbork).<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday it was exactly 75 years after that day, which was commemorated with the last survivors of the Holocaust.
