An exciting day, where the entire country is on its feet, clothed in orange and ready to celebrate. The\u00a0<em>koning\u00a0<\/em>visits a town where he is welcomed and invited to join in with all kinds of activities.\u00a0But&#8230; That&#8217;s not possible today, with <em>quarantaine<\/em><em>maatregelen<\/em> (quarantine measures) in place to fend off the coronavirus. So how is the king&#8217;s\u00a0<em>verjaardag\u00a0<\/em>celebrated today?<\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>Koningsdag wordt Woningsdag<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Zo ziet Koningsdag er dit jaar uit\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hKan2p3dvGc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Normally, <em>Koningsdag\u00a0<\/em>is full of hustle and bustle.\u00a0<em>Vrijmarkten\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;free markets&#8221;) are basically flea markets where people sell all kinds of things. The\u00a0<em>koning\u00a0<\/em>and his family visit a city in the country and follow a\u00a0<em>route\u00a0<\/em>(route), where they learn about the culture and traditions in that town through stories, games and performances. The route is filled to the brim with\u00a0<em>toeschouwers\u00a0<\/em>(spectators). And all of that is televised throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, there are\u00a0<em>koningsfestivals\u00a0<\/em>(king festivals) organised all over the Netherlands. Famous Dutch DJs and musicians entertain crowds of thousands to celebrate the birthday of the monarch.<\/p>\n<p>But now, in a time where the\u00a0<em>horeca <\/em>(term including hotels, restaurants and catering) is pretty much closed until May 19, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/coronavirus-the-dutch-response\/\">people are told to stay at home as much as possible<\/a> and the words\u00a0<em>anderhalve meter afstand<\/em> (one-and-a-half meter distance) is burned into everyone&#8217;s brains, a celebration like this is impossible.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s still the\u00a0<em>verjaardag van de koning<\/em>. So what&#8217;s the solution?<\/p>\n<p>A clever play on words!<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<strong><em>#Woningsdag<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Staatsloterij | Koningsdagtrekking\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8ifR_DBvIy4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Instead of\u00a0<em>Koningsdag<\/em>, we celebrate\u00a0<em>woningsdag\u00a0<\/em>(home day). So instead of going out, we all stay in and celebrate the\u00a0<em>verjaardag\u00a0<\/em>that way!<\/p>\n<p>It has just started, with the\u00a0<em>kerkklokken\u00a0<\/em>(church bells) tolling at 9:45. At 10 am, it is time for the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/het-wilhelmus-the-dutch-national-anthem\/\"><em>Wilhelmus<\/em>, the Dutch national anthem<\/a>. The idea is that everybody sings it from their\u00a0<em>balkon\u00a0<\/em>(balcony) or\u00a0<em>raam\u00a0<\/em>(window). That is also when the <em>koning <\/em>will speak a few words. There is even a sort of <em>vrijmarkt\u00a0<\/em>online, where people can sell their things! And at 4 pm, it is time for the\u00a0<em>Nationale Toost\u00a0<\/em>(national toast). You just drink a glass at home, and through live streams and TV, you can connect to the rest of the country and the\u00a0<em>koning<\/em>, of course.<\/p>\n<p>Follow everything on <a href=\"https:\/\/koningsdagthuis.nl\/#_blank\">this special website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What will that all look like?
