What is\u00a0the\u00a0Ridderzaal<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While the\u00a0Torentje\u00a0<\/em>is a small building at the edge of the complex that you might easily oversee, the\u00a0Ridderzaal\u00a0<\/em>is the exact opposite. It is, in fact, the most prominent building in the Binnenhof<\/em>, and an iconic emblem of centuries of Dutch\u00a0Politiek\u00a0<\/em>(politics). With its two torens <\/em>(towers) and roosvenster\u00a0<\/em>(rose window), it is at the center of the\u00a0Binnenhof<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Ridderzaal<\/em>, which means “Hall of Knights”, is one of the oldest buildings in the\u00a0Binnenhof<\/em>. It was built in 1280 and completed around 1288 by the order of Willem II van Holland <\/em>(William II of Holland). The\u00a0Ridderzaal\u00a0<\/em>is only part of the entire building, which also includes the\u00a0Rolzaal, Kelderzaal<\/em> and Lairessezaal<\/em>. While these are used for smaller meetings and receptions, the Ridderzaal <\/em>is by far the most noteworthy part of the complex, known as the g<\/em>rafelijke zalencomplex <\/em>(Hall complex of the counts).<\/p>\n

Originally, the\u00a0Ridderzaal\u00a0<\/em>was called Grote Zaal <\/em>(Great Hall) or\u00a0Hoge Zaal\u00a0<\/em>(High Hall).<\/p>\n

The complex was renovated several times over its long life. It used to have flags of the provinces hanging off the ceiling, which are now replaced by wall cloths. The wooden roof construction is not original anymore, either. It was taken down in 1860 and replaced with a cast iron construction, because the architect working on this renovation believed that the wooden construction was too complex and heavy for the time it was built. He assumed it was added later and was not original. As it turned out, it was the original roof he took down!<\/p>\n

In 1904, the renovation to its original state from the 13th century was finished, complete with a renewed wooden roof construction. Buildings that were erected around the\u00a0Ridderzaal<\/em>, obstructing its view were removed, and the original towers were built again.\u00a0This is largely what the Ridderzaal\u00a0<\/em>still looks like today, with periodic renovations to keep the building intact.<\/p>\n

Why does the\u00a0Ridderzaal<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>matter?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In its early years, the\u00a0Ridderzaal<\/em>\u00a0served as the ontvangstzaal\u00a0<\/em>(welcome hall) to the remaining grafelijke zalen <\/em>(halls of the counts), which lie behind the Ridderzaal<\/em>. However, when the\u00a0Republiek\u00a0<\/em>(Republic) was founded in 1648<\/a>, the Ridderzaal\u00a0<\/em>was used for all kinds of purposes. It was a\u00a0markt\u00a0<\/em>(market), a\u00a0wachtruimte\u00a0<\/em>(waiting room) for the rechtbank\u00a0<\/em>(court of law), which was situated in the\u00a0grafelijke zalen<\/em>\u00a0and was even used for trekkingen\u00a0<\/em>(draws) of the\u00a0Staatsloterij\u00a0<\/em>(State lottery).<\/p>\n

But things changed again when the Netherlands became a\u00a0monarchie\u00a0<\/em>(monarchy) once again. In 1900, it was decided to restore the\u00a0Ridderzaal\u00a0<\/em>and make it a\u00a0koninklijke zaal\u00a0<\/em>(royal hall). The interior now includes a\u00a0troon\u00a0<\/em>(throne) and the Dutch\u00a0grondwet<\/em> (constitution) is written on the haard <\/em>(fireplace).<\/p>\n

In 1994 and 1995, the\u00a0Eerste Kamer\u00a0<\/em>(First Chamber of Parliament)<\/a> even held their\u00a0vergaderingen\u00a0<\/em>(meetings) in the\u00a0Ridderzaal<\/em>, since their own chamber was being renovated.<\/p>\n

These days, the Zaal\u00a0<\/em>with room for 850 people is most famously used for the annual\u00a0troonrede<\/em> (throne speech)<\/a> on Prinsjesdag <\/em>(Prince’s Day) on the third Tuesday of September. This troonrede\u00a0<\/em>is a speech from the Dutch monarch\u00a0 in which he or she comments on what has happened in the past year and what the plans of the government are for the coming one. The Ridderzaal\u00a0<\/em>is on these\u00a0prinsjesdagen <\/em>also used for a verenigde vergadering <\/em>(common meeting) of the Staten-Generaal <\/em>(States-General), which describes the volksvertegenwoordiging <\/em>(people’s representation) according to the constitution, which comprises both chambers of Parliament, the Eerste Kamer<\/em> and\u00a0Tweede Kamer<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Besides that, it is also used for other official meetings, ceremonies and commemorations. It cannot be rented by private parties, since it is state-owned, and the government can’t meddle with the private sector like that. Currently, one of the adjacent halls, the Rolzaal<\/em>, is used by the weekly\u00a0ministerraad\u00a0<\/em>(council of ministers). Since it is big enough, the distance required due to the Coronavirus can be respected.<\/p>\n

Overall, it is an impressive building with a long history. Being one of the oldest governmental buildings still in use in the world, it is quite a gem!<\/p>\n
