The B<\/em>innenhof\u00a0<\/em>(Inner Court) is the center of the Dutch overheid\u00a0<\/em>(government). Located in the heart of Den Haag <\/em>(The Hague), it oozes Dutch geschiedenis <\/em>(history) and verhalen <\/em>(stories). In this series, we’ll go building by building and explore what each is all about. Today, we look at easily the biggest complex of the Binnenhof<\/em>: the Tweede Kamer<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What is the Tweede Kamer<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The\u00a0Tweede Kamer\u00a0<\/em>(Second Chamber) is made up of the entire complex appended at the bottom-left corner of the\u00a0Binnenhof<\/em>. It is easily the biggest part of the\u00a0Binnenhof<\/em>. And that is not surprising. With its 150\u00a0Tweede Kamerleden\u00a0<\/em>(Second Chamber members) and many political parties that all require rooms in the building, quite some space is required. The main room of the complex is the\u00a0plenaire vergaderzaal\u00a0<\/em>(plenary meeting hall). You can take a detailed look at the\u00a0plenaire zaal\u00a0<\/em>of the\u00a0Tweede Kamer\u00a0<\/em>on Google Maps via this link!<\/a> The\u00a0vergaderzaal\u00a0<\/em>also has a balcony, just like the\u00a0Eerste Kamer<\/em><\/a>. This allows the public to\u00a0bijwonen\u00a0<\/em>(attend) sessions of their parliament. As you can see, this\u00a0zaal\u00a0<\/em>looks very modern compared to other halls in the\u00a0Binnenhof<\/em>. That’s because the current\u00a0vergaderzaal\u00a0<\/em>was built recently, and started being used in 1992. Before that, the\u00a0Oude Zaal\u00a0<\/em>was used. Known for its horrible acoustics and small size, especially after the number of parliamentarians was increased from 100 to 150 in 1956, a new room was required. The\u00a0Oude Zaal\u00a0<\/em>was renovated and is now used for receptions.<\/p>\n

Besides the new\u00a0plenary, many other buildings were added, as well. This is why of all the buildings at the\u00a0Binnenhof<\/em>, the\u00a0Tweede Kamer\u00a0<\/em>has the youngest and most modern feel and look.<\/p>\n

Most negotiations do not take place in the plenaire zaal<\/em>. There are nine\u00a0commissiezalen\u00a0<\/em>(commission rooms) where topics are discussed in more depth. Beyond this, there is the H<\/em>andelingenkamer<\/em>, a beautiful room that serves as the library of the\u00a0Tweede Kamer<\/em>. Its name comes from\u00a0handelingen\u00a0<\/em>(actions), because everything that was said in the\u00a0Tweede Kamer <\/em>(the handelingen<\/em>) is stored here.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the\u00a0Tweede Kamer\u00a0<\/em>extends to the former\u00a0Ministerie van Koloni\u00ebn\u00a0<\/em>(Ministry of Colonies). That’s the building at the very bottom-left of the\u00a0Binnenhof<\/em>, the old one that stands out next to all the new buildings of the\u00a0Tweede Kamer<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Why does the Tweede Kamer <\/em><\/strong>matter?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The\u00a0Tweede Kamer\u00a0<\/em>is the heart of Dutch democracy<\/a>, with 150\u00a0volksvertegenwoordigers\u00a0<\/em>(representatives of the people) that are directly elected for four years. They keep a check on what the k<\/em>abinet <\/em>(cabinet) does and debate and approve wetten <\/em>(laws).<\/p>\n
