When I was a kid, I played <em>schaak\u00a0<\/em>(chess) competitively with a Dutch\u00a0<em>schaakvereniging\u00a0<\/em>(chess club). I was never that good, let alone at Beth Harmon&#8217;s level, but I had my fun and victories. I could really identify with the long and exhausting games that could last 4 hours or more. With the accurate depiction of <em>schaak<\/em>, based on real\u00a0<em>partijen\u00a0<\/em>(parties) played between\u00a0legendary\u00a0<em>spelers\u00a0<\/em>(players), it is a wonderful homage to the game. So I decided that I would do my own little miniseries on <em>schaak<\/em>\u00a0in the Netherlands. In this three-parter, I will look at the following questions: Did the Dutch ever have a <em>wereldkampioen\u00a0<\/em>(world champion)? How does chess vocabulary translate to Dutch? And what if you wanted to get started playing chess in the Netherlands yourself? It is the time that you make your first\u00a0<em>zetten\u00a0<\/em>to conquer\u00a0<em>het centrum<\/em> and to\u00a0<em>ontwikkelen\u00a0<\/em>your\u00a0<em>stukken<\/em>. Ideally, you can\u00a0<em>rokeren<\/em>, while\u00a0<em>dekken\u00a0<\/em>your\u00a0<em>stukken\u00a0<\/em>and not losing them. While e4, moving the\u00a0<em>koningspion<\/em> (king&#8217;s pawn) two squares up, is a common opening, the <em>damesgambiet<\/em>, where you use the <em>damespion <\/em>(queen&#8217;s pawn) and after<em> zwart\u00a0<\/em>plays the same move, you play c4 and offer your <i>pion <\/i>for a better\u00a0<em>stelling.<\/em> What you want to avoid at all costs is the\u00a0<em>herdersmat<\/em>! Can you get them to lose a\u00a0<em>pion<\/em>, can you gain any <em>voordeel <\/em>or <em>hout <\/em>anywhere? Or perhaps you can simply gain a better <em>stelling<\/em> by moving your pieces in more active positions? Maybe you&#8217;re ingenious and can find a way to make an <em>offer <\/em>in exchange for a winning position, finding your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AaKWUiiEHgA\">immortal game<\/a>! What you want to avoid here are <em>dubbelpionnen<\/em>, as these are quite useless and vulnerable most of the time. Also\u00a0<em>penningen\u00a0<\/em>and <em>vorken<\/em> can be quite painful, as they make it difficult to maneuver into a better position or make you lose <em>hout<\/em>! Both you and your opponent still have a\u00a0<em>dame\u00a0<\/em>and some<em> pionnen<\/em>. But how do you now get a win? Will you be able to push a\u00a0<em>pion\u00a0<\/em>for its\u00a0<em>promotie<\/em>? Perhaps there are still enough pieces for a\u00a0<em>stikmat\u00a0<\/em>or a\u00a0<em>mat-achter-de-paaltjes<\/em>, very sneaky, that last one, and sometimes easily overlooked. Maybe your position is worse than you expected it to be after the\u00a0<em>middenspel <\/em>and you have a <em>verloren stelling<\/em>. Or perhaps you are in <em>tijdnood <\/em>and don&#8217;t have enough <em>tijd <\/em>to find the winning <em>zetten<\/em>. Your best bet then is to get a <em>remise<\/em>. One way to get there is with\u00a0<em>pat\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>eeuwig schaak<\/em>. Or will you simply <em>opgeven<\/em>?
