We&#8217;ve discussed the fried dough treats <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/lets-make-oliebollen\/\">before<\/a>, as well as its companion, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/this-dutch-invention-revolutionized-nye\/\"><em>appelflap<\/em><\/a>. But we haven&#8217;t answered the question &#8211; who came up with them, and why is it only a tradition in the Netherlands? Their <em>scriblita\u00a0<\/em>appear to be the oldest predecessor to the modern\u00a0<em>oliebol<\/em>. They were sold as street food, where pieces of <em>zuurdesemdeeg\u00a0<\/em>(sourdough) were tossed in hot oil and deep fried. However, this is a theory that is not substantiated with\u00a0<em>bewijs\u00a0<\/em>(evidence), so it&#8217;s hard to say.<\/p>\n<p>So not the Romans then? Who knows. What is certain is that the\u00a0<em>oliebol\u00a0<\/em>already existed in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/the-gouden-eeuw-a-golden-time-for-the-dutch\/\"><em>Gouden Eeuw<\/em><\/a>, 17th century in the Netherlands, as there is evidence of them. Clearly, like in the painting above. There are also <em>recepten<\/em> (recipes) in <em>receptenboeken\u00a0<\/em>(recipe books) for the\u00a0<em>olie-koek\u00a0<\/em>(oil cookie), as they were known back then.<\/p>\n<p>However, these\u00a0<em>olie-koeken <\/em>had a different meaning back then. While they were eaten in the cold season, they were not regarded as the <em>lekkernij <\/em>(delicacy) eaten during the holidays. This doesn&#8217;t mean you can&#8217;t eat it all-year round. There are\u00a0<em>oliebollenkramen\u00a0<\/em>(oliebol stalls) at\u00a0<em>kermissen\u00a0<\/em>(fairs), for example. But most Dutch really only eat them around the\u00a0<em>jaarwisseling\u00a0<\/em>(turn of the year). And while most people buy their share\u00a0<em>kant-en-klaar\u00a0<\/em>(ready-made), you can easily make them yourself!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/lets-make-oliebollen\/\">We&#8217;ve posted a recipe years ago<\/a>, but that doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s any worse now. In fact, the unchanged nature of the recipe is something quite remarkable about\u00a0<em>oliebollen<\/em>.
