Like many other countries, the Netherlands introduced an\u00a0avondklok\u00a0<\/em>(curfew) to reduce the incidence of COVID cases. The rule that entered into force on Saturday prohibits people from going outside between 21:00 (9 pm) and 4:30 (4:30 am). Some of the Dutch didn’t like that. From ways to\u00a0omzeilen\u00a0<\/em>(circumvent) the avondklok<\/em> to\u00a0rellen<\/em> (riots), a lot has happened in the past week, with interesting Dutch words alongside it! Today, we’re checking out some of these words and put them in the context of the news. At the end, you can find some sources and further reading in Dutch.<\/p>\n

Thuisbezord-jassen <\/em>–\u00a0de avondklok omzeilen<\/em><\/strong><\/h1>\n

When the\u00a0avondklok\u00a0<\/em>was announced about a week ago<\/a>, some Dutch people got concerned. They couldn’t go out anymore after 21:00!\u00a0Een ramp\u00a0<\/em>(a catastrophe). But there were\u00a0uitzonderingen\u00a0<\/em>(exceptions) to the rule. De hond uitlaten\u00a0<\/em>(to walk the dog) and noodgevallen\u00a0<\/em>(emergencies) are geldige redenen\u00a0<\/em>(valid reasons) for which no\u00a0verklaring\u00a0<\/em>(declaration) is necessary. A\u00a0verklaring\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0verplicht\u00a0<\/em>(required) for other reasons, such as\u00a0werk<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0noodgeval\u00a0<\/em>doesn’t seem like a great way to get around the rules. But\u00a0de hond uitlaten<\/em>? Easy. All you need is a\u00a0hond<\/em>. And what about\u00a0werk\u00a0<\/em>(work)? In the days before the exact rules around the\u00a0avondklok\u00a0<\/em>were even clear, there was a\u00a0stormloop\u00a0<\/em>(rush) on\u00a0Thuisbezorgd-jassen\u00a0<\/em>(Thuisbezorgd (online food delivery service) jackets). They were offered on platforms like M<\/em>arktplaats<\/em><\/a>. Bezorgjassen <\/i>(delivery jackets) went for up to 800 euros, and were sold in no time. All in the hope that with a\u00a0bezorgjas<\/em>, one would not get checked by the police and receive a\u00a0boete\u00a0<\/em>(fine). Delivery services and\u00a0Marktplaats\u00a0<\/em>weren’t happy with these\u00a0advertenties<\/em> (adverts) and took action to take them down.<\/p>\n

On top of that, the rules now require anybody who is outside after 21:00 for work to carry a\u00a0werkgeversverklaring\u00a0<\/em>(employer declaration) and a personal\u00a0verklaring<\/em> – so just a\u00a0bezorgjas\u00a0<\/em>won’t cut it.<\/p>\n

But what about\u00a0de hond uitlaten<\/em>?<\/p>\n

If you have\u00a0hond<\/em>, you don’t need a\u00a0verklaring<\/em>. You can simply go outside and walk your dog. Awesome, thought many dogless people too.<\/p>\n

The website matcheenleenhond.nl<\/a> (match a loan dog) saw a five-time increase in demand for a\u00a0hond<\/em>, unable to keep up with demand. However, they advice against getting a dog yourself just for the avondklok<\/em>: “Ga nou niet in een opwelling een hond aanschaffen. Zo\u2019n dier kost heel veel tijd en verzorging.”\u00a0<\/em>(Don’t just impulsively get a dog now. It’s an animal that requires a lot of time and care.)<\/p>\n

It’s a similar story for the website hondjeuitlaten.nl<\/a>. The services are free for both the\u00a0eigenaar\u00a0<\/em>(owner) and the\u00a0lener\u00a0<\/em>(loaner).<\/p>\n

Not a terrible way to go outside after 21:00, if you really wanted to.1<\/a><\/sup>I personally don’t get why – it’s cold and dark in the Netherlands this time of the year at that time!<\/span><\/p>\n
