(Photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@single_lens_reflex?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\">Dan Burton<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/s\/photos\/point?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\">Unsplash<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Before we get to that difference, let&#8217;s start with the basics.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ik\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; I<\/p>\n<p><em>Jij\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; You<\/p>\n<p><em>Hij\/zij\/het <\/em>&#8211; He\/she\/it<\/p>\n<p><em>Wij\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; We<\/p>\n<p><em>Jullie\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; You (plural)<\/p>\n<p><em>Zij\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; They<\/p>\n<p><em>Verbuigen\u00a0<\/em>(to conjugate) for these pronouns is pretty easy, too. Let&#8217;s use the verb\u00a0<em>fietsen\u00a0<\/em>(to bike) as an example:<\/p>\n<p><em>Ik fiets<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Jij fiets<strong>t<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hij\/zij\/het fiets<strong>t<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Wij fiets<strong>en<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Jullie fiets<strong>en<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Zij\u00a0fiets<strong>en<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, as you can see, this is pretty easy!\u00a0From the\u00a0<em>stam\u00a0<\/em>(root) of the\u00a0<em>werkwoord\u00a0<\/em>(verb) you just add some stuff. Most often, the <em>stam\u00a0<\/em>is simply the\u00a0<em>hele werkwoord\u00a0<\/em>(full verb) without the -en. So: the <em>stam\u00a0<\/em>of\u00a0<em>fietsen\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0<em>fiets<\/em>. For I, it&#8217;s just the\u00a0<em>stam<\/em>. For You and He\/She\/It, it&#8217;s the <em>stam <\/em>+t. Then, for the plural pronouns, you just add -en, which in many cases looks the same as the\u00a0<em>hele werkwoord<\/em>. Pretty good, no?<\/p>\n<p>Little curious thing for the <em>jij fietst<\/em>: In some cases, the order is reversed, and the\u00a0<em>werkwoord\u00a0<\/em>comes before the pronoun:\u00a0<em>fiets jij?\u00a0<\/em>(do you bike?) That&#8217;s for another post, but be aware that this exists!<\/p>\n<p>So, what&#8217;s up with those other forms?<\/p>\n<h1><strong>What are the pronouns\u00a0<em>je, ze\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>we<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Toespraak Koning n.a.v. coronavirus (COVID-19)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SWLyu_F35W4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In Dutch, we have so-called\u00a0<em>onbenadrukte\u00a0<\/em>(unemphasized) and\u00a0<em>benadrukte\u00a0<\/em>(emphasized)\u00a0<em>voornaamwoorden.\u00a0<\/em>Between the forms\u00a0<em>je\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>jij<\/em>,\u00a0<em>ze\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>zij\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>we\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>wij<\/em>, you can probably guess which is which.\u00a0<em>Je, ze\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>we<\/em> roll off the tongue quickly, without much attention. If you replace that\u00a0<em>e\u00a0<\/em>with an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/can-you-say-this-correctly-5-fair-trade-basmatirijst\/\"><em>lange ij<\/em><\/a>, it suddenly gets a lot more air time! If you want to refer to objects, you should use\u00a0<em>die.\u00a0<\/em>So:<\/p>\n<p><em>De mensen zijn al in Amsterdam. Zij hebben de goede trein gepakt, ik niet! <\/em>(The people are already in Amsterdam. They took the right train, not me!)<\/p>\n<p><em>De Egyptische kasten worden naar Amsterdam gebracht. Die zijn pas oud!\u00a0<\/em>(The Egyptian wardrobes are brought to Amsterdam. Those ones are old!)<\/p>\n<p>Again, this is ONLY for plural\u00a0<em>zij<\/em>. Plural\u00a0<em>ze\u00a0<\/em>is not affected by this!\u00a0<em>Ze\u00a0<\/em>can refer to\u00a0<em>kasten<\/em>,\u00a0<em>mensen<\/em>, whatever else that&#8217;s &#8220;they&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>So,\u00a0<em>je, ze\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>we\u00a0<\/em>are the unemphasized\u00a0<em>voornaamwoorden<\/em>.\u00a0<em>Ik, hij, het\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>jullie\u00a0<\/em>don&#8217;t have emphasized versions. The emphasized versions are likely the ones you see when studying Dutch\u00a0<em>voornaamwoorden\u00a0<\/em>for the first time. They&#8217;re the &#8220;official&#8221; forms. It makes sense, of course, as they are the emphasis in any lesson on pronouns. In use, together with stressing the tone of the sentence on the pronoun, it emphasizes the pronoun. The second one can be either\u00a0<em>ze\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>zij<\/em>. Most times, people use the unemphasized version, as there&#8217;s no need for making speaking harder. It is similar to how English verbs get apostrophes. Because &#8220;aren&#8217;t&#8221; is simply quicker, easier and the same as &#8220;are not&#8221;. Unless &#8211; you got it &#8211; you need to put emphasis on the <strong>not<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Because you don&#8217;t often emphasize pronouns, and because, like in English, the Dutch also prefer a quicker way of speaking, the unemphasized forms are used a lot more. Just like\u00a0<em>aren&#8217;t\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>are not<\/em>. There&#8217;s no real difference between formal or informal settings. Both are used in those cases. If it is very formal, you might encounter the emphasized forms more. Not for emphasis, but, like I said, it is the more &#8220;official&#8221; form. And if speaking more slowly, this form sounds more clear and natural. So in a speech by <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/dutch-kings-day-in-quarantine\/\">King Willem-Alexander<\/a>, you might hear them more.
