Benzineprijzen\u00a0<\/em>(gasoline prices) have gone off the rails in the Netherlands. They shot well above 2 euros per liter<\/strong><\/a> (in American terms, that’s more than 8 dollars per gallon!<\/strong>), with record stijgingen <\/em>(increases). A main reason given is de oorlog in de Ukraine <\/em>(war in Ukraine). Some tankstations\u00a0<\/em>(gas stations) took this crisis as an opportunity for a reclamestunt <\/em>(ad stunt), and attracted long\u00a0rijen\u00a0<\/em>(queues) for more affordable prices\u00a0aan de pomp\u00a0<\/em>(at the pump). So with\u00a0benzine\u00a0<\/em>in the news so much, let’s talk about\u00a0tanken<\/em> (to get gas)!<\/p>\n

Before we look at any vocabulary, let’s talk about the process of\u00a0tanken\u00a0<\/em>in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

It’s most common to enter the shop\u00a0<\/em>(shop) of the tankstation\u00a0<\/em>to pay for the\u00a0benzine\u00a0<\/em>after you filled up the\u00a0benzinetank\u00a0<\/em>(gas tank). However, you will also find electronic payment methods, especially at\u00a0tankstations\u00a0<\/em>without a shop or\u00a0servicepersoneel\u00a0<\/em>(service personnel).<\/p>\n

Regardless, it’s pretty rare to find a\u00a0tankstation\u00a0<\/em>with a fill-up service. In almost all cases, you’re gonna have to do the filling up yourself.<\/p>\n

The rest of the process is pretty much the same as anywhere else.<\/p>\n

One interesting thing is that the Dutch word\u00a0tank\u00a0<\/em>comes quite obviously from the English “tank”. We made our own verb\u00a0tanken\u00a0<\/em>from it, and that’s where tankstatio<\/em>n\u00a0comes from, as well.\u00a0A\u00a0tank\u00a0<\/em>is identical to the English tank – it’s a perfect anglicism!<\/p>\n

So what is the kind of vocabulary and sentences useful for\u00a0tanken<\/em>? Here’s a list:<\/p>\n

de benzine<\/strong><\/em> – gasoline (also used as a general term referring to car fuel)<\/p>\n

het benzinestation\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>– gas station<\/p>\n

de benzinepomp<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>– gas pump, fuel station<\/p>\n

de benzineprijs<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>– gasoline price<\/p>\n

de dieselprijs <\/em><\/strong>– diesel price<\/p>\n

de tankdop<\/em><\/strong> –\u00a0<\/em>fuel cap<\/p>\n

opladen <\/strong><\/em>– to charge<\/p>\n

de wasstraat\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>– car wash<\/p>\n

een volle tank<\/strong><\/em> – a full tank<\/p>\n

de parkeerplaats\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>– parking spot, parking area<\/p>\n
