{"id":1382,"date":"2012-06-14T09:00:22","date_gmt":"2012-06-14T13:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/?p=1382"},"modified":"2014-08-06T10:04:55","modified_gmt":"2014-08-06T14:04:55","slug":"flag-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/flag-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Flag Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today is Flag Day in the United States and so I thought I would introduce you to some flag related vocabulary and briefly explain this holiday and the American flag to you.\u00a0 The American flag has two common nick names by which it is sometimes known; these names are &#8220;The Stars and Stripes&#8221; and &#8220;Old Glory.&#8221;\u00a0 Both of these phrases are synonyms for the phrase &#8220;American flag.&#8221;\u00a0 For example, you might hear someone say &#8220;I saw the Stars and Stripes flying in front of your house.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vocabulary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>nouns<\/strong><br \/>\nflag &#8211; a piece of cloth, with a design on it that is the symbol of a nation, state, or other organization<br \/>\nExample: All countries have their own national <em>flags<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>flag pole &#8211; a staff or pole on which a flag is displayed<br \/>\nExample: The <em>flag pole<\/em> in front of the school does not have a flag on it.<\/p>\n<p>half-mast or half-staff &#8211; a position for hanging a flag that is halfway between the top and the bottom of the flag pole<br \/>\nExample: I wonder why the flag is at <em>half-mas<\/em>t?<br \/>\n(Flags are hung at half-mast in the United States to indicate mourning or remembrance, usually when someone important has died.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>verbs<\/strong><br \/>\nto flutter: to move in quick, irregular motions in the wind<br \/>\nExample: The flag <em>fluttered<\/em> in the light breeze.<\/p>\n<p>to fly: to move through the air<br \/>\nExample: The flag is <em>flying<\/em> in front of the court house.<\/p>\n<p>to fold: to bend over and upon itself<br \/>\nExample: After taking the flag down it has to be <em>folded<\/em> before being put away.<\/p>\n<p>to hoist: to raise or lift<br \/>\nThe boy <em>hoisted<\/em> the flag to the top of the flag pole.<\/p>\n<p>to raise &#8211; to lift up<br \/>\nExample: We <em>raise<\/em> and lower the flag every day.<\/p>\n<p>to unfurl &#8211; to spread or open; to unfold.<br \/>\nExample: The flag was<em> unfurled<\/em> before it was attached to the flag pole.<\/p>\n<p>to wave &#8211; to sway up and down or to and fro in the wind<br \/>\nExample: The flag is <em>waving<\/em> in the wind.<\/p>\n<p>The national flag of the United States is made up of thirteen horizontal stripes of red and white, and a blue rectangle in the left-hand corner which contains fifty small, white, five-pointed stars in nine offset horizontal rows of five or six stars.
