{"id":176,"date":"2012-01-06T09:00:35","date_gmt":"2012-01-06T14:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/?p=176"},"modified":"2012-01-06T00:32:32","modified_gmt":"2012-01-06T05:32:32","slug":"common-abbreviations-in-english","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/common-abbreviations-in-english\/","title":{"rendered":"Common Abbreviations in English"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Abbreviated words are everywhere in writing.\u00a0 Abbreviations are so plentiful I thought I&#8217;d go over some useful ones here.\u00a0 First though, let us define what an abbreviation is.\u00a0 An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase.\u00a0 Abbreviations are good to use in writing, to save space and time, but they are essential to know when you are reading because they are used so frequently in writing in English.<\/p>\n<p>Abbreviations usually consist of a letter or group of letters that are taken from the word or phrase that is being abbreviated.\u00a0 For example, the word abbreviation can itself abbreviated to: <em>abbr.<\/em> or <em>abbrv<\/em>.\u00a0 Sometimes there is a period (.) at the end of the group of letter or between each letter of an abbreviation and sometimes there is no period; this just depends on the specific abbreviation.\u00a0 Acronyms are considered a type of abbreviation and are also found plentifully* in English.\u00a0 Acronyms are made by taking the first letter of each word in a phrase and creating a new word, for example: CEO = Chief Executive Officer.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a list of some very common abbreviations in English you might want to learn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A.D.<\/strong> &#8211; &#8220;Anno Domini&#8221;** = the year 0 in the Julian and Gregorian calendars indicating time after Christ\u2019s birth<br \/>\n<strong>A.M.<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cante meridiem\u201d = before noon<br \/>\n<strong>asap<\/strong> \u2013 as soon as possible<br \/>\n<strong>Attn.<\/strong> \u2013 attention<br \/>\n<strong>B.C.<\/strong> \u2013 before Christ<br \/>\n<strong>Dept.<\/strong> \u2013 department<br \/>\n<strong>C<\/strong> \u2013 Celsius<br \/>\n<strong>c\/o<\/strong> \u2013 care of (for correspondences)<br \/>\n<strong>Dr.<\/strong> \u2013 doctor<br \/>\n<strong>etc.<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 \u201cet cetera\u201d = and so forth<br \/>\n<strong>e.g.<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cexempli gratia\u201d = for example<br \/>\n<strong>Jr.<\/strong> \u2013 junior<br \/>\n<strong>km<\/strong> \u2013 kilometer<br \/>\n<strong>F<\/strong> \u2013 Fahrenheit<br \/>\n<strong>ft.<\/strong> \u2013 feet <strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>i.e.<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cid est\u201d =\u00a0 that is<br \/>\n<strong>in.<\/strong> \u2013 inches<br \/>\n<strong>lb<\/strong>. \u2013 pound<br \/>\n<strong>n\/a<\/strong> \u2013 not applicable<br \/>\n<strong>mi.<\/strong> \u2013 miles<br \/>\n<strong>min.<\/strong> \u2013 minutes<br \/>\n<strong>MD<\/strong> \u2013 Doctor of Medicine<br \/>\n<strong>Mr.<\/strong> \u2013 mister<br \/>\n<strong>Mrs.<\/strong> \u2013 misses<br \/>\n<strong>Ms.<\/strong> \u2013 miss<br \/>\n<strong>oz.<\/strong> \u2013 ounce<br \/>\n<strong>Ph.D.<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cphilosophiae doctor\u201d = having a doctorate degree<br \/>\n<strong>P.M.<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cpost meridiem\u201d = after noon<br \/>\n<strong>Prof<\/strong>. \u2013 professor<br \/>\n<strong>p.s.<\/strong> \u2013 post script<br \/>\n<strong>tbsp.<\/strong> \u2013 tablespoon<br \/>\n<strong>tsp.<\/strong> \u2013 teaspoon<br \/>\n<strong>vs.<\/strong> \u2013 versus<br \/>\n<strong>yd.<\/strong> &#8211;
